Well look who’s back, and he even brought friends. My what a nice fellow. Ahem.
This page took longer than I wanted to concoct – it’s fairly low on panes, but the angles were a tad odd, not to mention matching the background topography into the scene, and a few effects that had to be added in post. It’s not perfect, but save for taking a minor eternity trying to export part of or the entire deadmines it’s probably as proper as it can be.
Edit: No update today (thursday, 17′th) – sorry about that, but I’m catching a flight home over the holidays tomorrow and there’s a bunch of packing and other stuff that needs to be done ’til then, so I won’t have time to finish the comic as well. Things should resume as normal on sunday. Sorry for the holdup, but I’d hoped to get it done beforehand, which unfortunately has not turned out to be the case.

those humans failed just as hard as that guy beheading Richard in last thursday’s LFG! amazing
That is one revealing Te’len!
I noticed that too.. geez. I thought she was such an innocent elf.. :P
on the side note really nice panel tho, specially like Hani at the last one with the throwing knife.
not revealing enough IMO
I get the feeling that hani really hates guns for some reason
Even though she’s “bringing a knife to a gun fight” I think she will be fine.
Yeah.. she’s got it covered.
Yeah not nice when you have some idiot let a gun off in your ears. I’ve had that done to me when I was in the forces was so we got use to hearing them without ear protection even so it’s still not fun when the barrel is inches from the sides of your ears. So my sympathy’s to the poor Defias on that front.
As for the chance to attack Hani’s got a more than a few seconds if those are single shot rifles because of the reload time if they are real world ones if not then this might be tricky given the distance.
Nice work as always. :)
@ Arcfelonas – I know you in RL mate and you were never in the forces. How I chuckled :D
Nhani, keep up the good work, I’ve followed you from the beginning and always look forward to the next episode. Outstanding work ;)
It took me a while to see Hani holding her dagger, I though Te will be forced to start spamming Wrath.
Wait, I noticed another thing. As we all know, if you see Hani grinning, you should run for your life. Here, she looks very, very angry…
Hahaha what a stoooopit Defias guy. “There they are! Fire!” *BA-BOOM!* Aargh! My ears! XD
Well he did say fire didn’t he? He got what he asked for.
Awesome title, and I laughed at Areen trying to avoid a falling Te-len in frame 3.
Suddenly I’m reminded of one of the “100 Ways to Die in Halo 3″ in that they correct themselves on bringing a sword to a gunfight – in that it actually works out that you shouldn’t bring a gun to a swordfight. For the YT loyalists, it’s the two parter one – think it’s in the first half, but check for me before pasting.
As for the page, another great action clip – and I concur with the fellow above me: She looks very, very angry…and I don’t think running will help this trio like it did those two back in Chapter Two who fled for their lives. And the fact that Mr. Commander there not only got his ears blasted by several ounces of gunpowder but he also has his attention diverted to his ‘comrades’ means that Hani’s retribution will be made swift and with the element of surprise – particularly if he turns around at the other two within the next picture or two.
Safe to say: They won’t survive Hani’s wrath.
Ye Hani is holding a dagger, but im sure any paladin agrees with me when i say “Shields are for tossing” I remeber the mines were more busy when playing vanilla than they are nowdays. But dunno if they were that busy :)
i am pretty sure that his ears will be the least of his worries soon…that is unless he survives…and isnt very talkative…
nice page Nhani
Ohhh, now THIS i do like, i kinda forgot that our hero’s dont have HP bars which just go down nomatter what hits them, however with alittle realism, a gun suddenly becomes a thing worth respecting… Very interesting indeed! And yes, its been a while, but HANI looks pissed :P … or atleast calculative as to whom that shiny dagger she “found” belongs to *wink wink nudge nudge*
If i were her, id toss it at the male shooter, since she would then have an attack angle in which the middle fella would block the females path to fire. Then i would go up and ask them wer… nah, screw that, someone needs to die nau! ^^… or atleast get beat up!
Oh! and thinking about it, hani could allways toss one of our smaller hero’s incase she runs out of knives ;P
… i wonder how Hani would look duelweilding gun’s “Devil may cry”-style 8)
“hani could allways toss one of our smaller hero’s incase she runs out of knives”\
My vote is for Areen. That way, it’s still a deadlyweapon she threw.
What I like the most is that while Areen and Tel is frightened of the assualt, Hani stands ready to kill with the “Oh no you didn’t” look on her eyes and Rei’s having the time of her life
Somehow I think there will be survivors… just a hunch…
Splendid good-memory recalling panes these are. More of those would be nice =)
P.S. And indeed, the idea of Hani wielding guns somehow makes me feel bad for any enemy she comes upon… that would just be a very unfair slaughter, or as I recall from a game I used to play a long time ago: Monster Kill! Ludicrous Kill!! Holy Shit!!! (UT2004)
any one noted it but i think Te’len shirt is clipping an bit on her leg not mush.
((Lower left picture))((yes i know not worth even to mention just it appear to be something to do whit every model thing i think the collision point is on the bone join not where the skin should be))
and yee reviling glad am not at school whit some one looking over my shoulders.
Silly humans……they’re allready dead, they just haven’t realised it yet.
Haha!
In one of the episodes of Freeman’s Mind (done by Ross Scott, who also does Civil Protection) Gordon Freeman learns that shooting his 9mm at headcrabs in a narrow airvent is not so smart, due to the MASSIVE NOISE!
The noise of guns in WoW is close to painful. This is why I use Earplugs (LINK).
seen that series Zenku,
any way IM the only one seeing the Clipping or is am I wrong?
The skirt isn’t clipping her leg. Technically, it clips into the heel of her off foot, but you don’t see that because Areen is in the way. Also technically, the skirt intersects itself in a few places, most of which are either also hidden on the other side or just barely noticeable.
There is also no collision detection whatsoever. That would require running some form of simulation, which takes significant amount of processing time. Some games may be able to run such realtime, but much like with shadows.. games tend to cheat.
Forget about skirt clipping and stuff – that 5:th frame reminds me of a typical ecchi anime, where the girls always trip in some episode and you can really see up their skirts – maybe Nhani got inspired by that, but who knows… ^^
I was actually thinking more that it’s a fairly natural pose to end up in after tripping on something and toppling over backwards much as she actually did; it also has a tendency to rather hurt, which is why she hasn’t entirely clicked the whole “We’re under attack” thing because she’s currently preoccupied with being in pain.
It also implies that Hani might be starting to see Te’len less as a fragile flower and more as a Sister in Arms, because while well-intending, that shove was anything but gentle.
For the record, I actually spend quite a bit of time sometimes trying to avoid direct upskirts or other panty shots with Te’len – she might show leg and cleavage a fair bit, but it generally doesn’t go beyond that; I don’ think it needs to. ;)
Not beyond that!?! *gasp*
So you claim that you will not let this comic get to the point were it has gone “Beyond the tree”?!?! i am ashamed to hear this, bad Nhani! Denial towards your own comic, tsk i say, tsk!
;P
But why show people things that they already picture so much better in their heads?
Amazing what you can spark of conversations from a poorly placed sarcastic joke :P
Ah, Sarcasm. For what value is it to a man if he gains the joke but loses its own meaning?
Or in other words “How is it that you’ve been so defeated!”
Not claiming your comic should be a perv show – sometimes things like these just do surprise me for some reason; could depend on that this is something I wouldn’t expect the great Nhani to do, even if it’s just legs and cleavage … not to mention Raene’s new outfit. :O
I think it depends on how you perceive it; for me, Te’len is definitely intented to be pretty and sexy both – the accidental hints and flashes of curves and shapes are all part of the visual design. That said, you never really see more than that, even in situations like this, and that’s what makes it powerful: she might not be showing more than part of her legs, but since it’s all partially veiled, your mind fills in the blanks automatically.
Contrast this to a few pages ago where Hani was pretty much shown in only panties and a sports bra, and yet the overall focus and impression is quite different because Hani is far more upfront and visible – it makes it less like flashing naughty bits and more like an athlete in sportswear, especially with her physique.
As for Raene’s outfit, I’d admit the overall impression people get from it wasn’t entirely the one intended – I think part of that is due to this playful grin she usually carries. I’ve been considering what I might do to tweak it somewhat and change the focus and impression just a little, while still keeping the important parts about it.
I think Te in her clothes looks sexy enough. Besides, there are enough examples of Internet Rule 34.
Never bash a troll?
think you mean number 36.
“if it exists theres porn of it.”
thats rule 46, named after the time where most men get a harley >.<
Actually, Rule 34 is the one that states that pornographic or sexually related material exists for any conceivable subject, no exceptions. Rule 35 follows this up by stating that if such material doesn’t exist, it must be created to satisfy rule 34.
Rule 36 describes fetishes, not pornography; and rule 46 has several meanings, which will vary depending on your source.
*insert NBC’s “the more you know” flourish here*
Wha … Internet Rules? Never heard of it! *Bashing the delete button numerous times* >.<
Oh god please dont mention Rule 36……
Hilariously enough, according to the statistics wordpress.com spits at me on what search terms people have used to find BtT via search engines, people apparently have searched for it on BtT characters.
That said, I don’t think it exists to find.
It has been a very long time since I visited BtT first, but I remember I clicked a link from Cru the Dwarf.
Yeah, I first found this on CtD as well.
First time I saw Beyond the tree.. hmm.. think it was during BFD thingie, saw it on the frontpage with one of the puns you usually have there and started laughing abit at it, pressed it and read it forth, at the start I was like “Meh, where is the laugh?” then I just grew in love with the concept and the different way of humor/Humour(never knew which one is the correct one) Especially the thing with imps wearing jackets :D
@mendariel: Both are correct, depending on your prefered. “Humour” is English, whereas “Humor” is American English.
Oops, deleted too much words while typing. Of course, the first sentence should end with “depending on your prefered language”.
Well im of scandinavian blood (we say Humor there) so I’ll stick to that =D
ops sorry there but i usually visit this page in school and i am not so good at typing so well i type it in in google so it can correct me and point me here.
I spell beyound the tree like that for ages.. ******* i did it again.
and why i can´t get it from my bookmark is cos the bookmarks or nothing is getting saved in my login account in school.
and before i forget my example of the Internet rules states its rule 34 whit 35 being if it don´t it will.
Hani did not shoot first.
Very nice page! As they always are.
much as I like this webcomic thing, this page makes use of a plot device I’ve come to completely hate in the past years (no, I will NOT say how many):
Hero(s) standing unprotected/unarmored, completely oblivious to nearby badguy(s). Badguys creep closer and – still unnoticed – open fire. Even with the advantage of complete surprise on their side, the badguys STILL manage to effectively completely miss the Hero(s).
Sorry, just one of those things that chaps my hide.
On the good side, though, good catch with the gunshot volume. Boomsticks are loud enough out in the open; confined in a structure or cave, they’re a LOT louder. Depending on type of powder and – of course – quantity, you are looking at possible ruptured eardrums.
It was actually envisioned differently at first, with one of them shooting too early (thus missing entirely) and that that clued everyone off. That said, it didn’t really seem to come across when I was trying to put it in visual because then it ended up just what you say – how did they completely miss someone who was barely even aware of them? The “I told you to wait until they were out in the open!” shout to follow didn’t really seem to excuse it.
Sooo.. instead I decided it was better to have one of them shout out “There they are!” just as they cross the corner – both to draw attention to where they are and to give Hani just enough time to duck to cover behind the support beam. She’s actually not that visible to them – she’s right next to the beam (though largely obscuring it) as she’s coming across the corner, so she’s basically just leaning back slightly to get out of sight.
It still makes them somewhat on the inept side, of course, but now the one yelling is more to blame than the shooters, so it’s less an issue of Defias riflemen training their marksmanship with the legendary Imperial Stormtroopers.
Not to mention, if they were patrolling, they would have to shoulder their arms before firing, definitely giving their targets enough time to take cover before they could fire.
And, in defense of Imperial Stormtroopers, remember that they were shooting at heroes fleeing towards an escape vehicle with the Imperial equivalent of LoJack secretly installed, and that Darth Vader expected them to get away.
Now now, the troopers in Ep 2 could actually hit stuff… one can ponder however if that aint the same people who is in the suits those 30 years after, old and near-death.. and half-blind… plus they are smaller. Still, point well made ^^
You could always blame the weapons themselves, guns without rifling (and most early rifles as well) are horribly inaccurate. The expression: “Don’t shoot until you see the whites of their eyes” comes from the fact that if you shot further away than that you could be sure to hit (and that’s not a very long distance at all).
So hows today’s comic going? =D
It’s amazing to pay a quick visit this web site and reading the views of all colleagues concerning this article, while I am also eager of getting knowledge.
