As the initial plan went, this was intended as the first time we see Edwin VanCleef; I took great care to avoid his name being mentioned within the narrative to raise a question as to whether he was even there. In the end though, I don’t think a single person actually went for it.
Soooo, I put his introduction a little earlier to get something else out of it, and instead of implying he might not be there, settling for implying that they might miss him entirely. As a result, it becomes all the more apparent that it ends up being him that seeks them out, rather than what you’d normally have.
Ooo there he is! excellent job with the cape on him.. Lapdogs all of you. <3
I would love to have a wallpaper of the last panel with Van Cleef. He sure looks dapper with the cape of the brotherhood!
Alright, alright!, larger render it is. With some random trivia as bonus.
Brilliant!
Just, what’s up with VanCleef’s right arm and cloak? :)
His right hand is resting on his hip.
Taking the essential story and content but changing it to make sense for a single player experience works for me. That the entire shipfull of Defias doesn’t mob you as soon as you blast the doors in-game doesn’t make any sense, and is only done for game balance anyway.
You’ve really depicted him great Nhani! .. I must agree on the idea of a Wallpaper with him in a pose like that… and GOD ive farmed that cape some times.. ahh so many memories all in one single screen… You’ve made my day, thanks Nhani :D awesomesauce of win as allways ^^
ps: Poor mechanical Tiny-machine of doom lies broken :< (It must join as a permanent part of the crew! *nodnod*)
It nobly sacrificed itself for the rest of the group and has gone to the Grand Explosion that is the goblin machine afterlife.
Final Boss!
VanCleef!
So, is it gonna be a one-hit kill kinda thing or will we actually see some nice fighting and dodging on VanCleef’s side?
Van Cleef.
I always liked the guy.
Terrible fighter, not so great strategian, but a master dreamer.
He’s the man that made Stormwind. From the walls of the castle to the cathedral it was the stonemasons that did it.
It’ll be a pity to see him go here, I always found Blizz did away with him too early.
Interestingly enough, VanCleef seems to have proven a fair bit more memorable than many technically much grander (and higher leveled) foes – part because VanCleef is simply that much more developed on, and isn’t just evil for the sake of being evil. The bits we’re given does explain – but not excuse – the path he took, making his perhaps more of a cautionary tale.
I agree that it sucks that hes gone, but deadmines still lives on since his daughter took up the mantle. But I’m really excited to see how this fight will go out! :D
Oh, are you planing to do anything with Cookie? or will he just wander around like nothing happened?
Blrghglglglglll. Gllrbll lrg? Blrgll grrblr blrglgrr.
Rough translation: Unessential. Wonder why? It’s a murloc.
And yes, I do know the murloc language … I think. =/
I can only this glimpse of insight into Nhani’s mind:
!
Hehehe, I invented a new game, it’s called “Pretend VanCleef talks like Revolver Ocelot”
Interestingly enough, while scripting up most of the various dialogue (and monologue!) he gets, I actually ended up picturing him voiced by Tim Curry. And it was somewhere between frighteningly awesome and utterly hilarious.
How d’you do, Aaaah see you’ve met maaah faithful…Handyman!
He’s just a little brought down because…when you knocked…He thought you were the…Candyman!
Don’t get strung out…by the way that ah look…Don’t judge a book by its cover
Ahm not much of a man bah the light of day,
But by night ahm one hell of a loverrrr!
Vancleef’s just a sweet transvestite from transsexual, Deadmines.
Ah, VanCleef, in all his awesome, did absolutely deserve a catchy opening phrase! And he did it well, too. I’ve got a great deal of admiration for that guy already, and I think this does nothing but heighten it. As always, great job! I’m thrilled by the tension rising. :-)
Well you know what they say Smite…
Those who aren’t welcome…
*Puts on Sunglasses*
Walk the plank…
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOWWWWWWWWW!
You have gained 5 internets points.
This would be a good moment to jump on that great wheel in the background to reset aggro!
So, I’m sure this has been asked at some point… but are we gonna see Vanessa?
According to lore, Vanessa’s adopted by the Saldeans after Edwin VanCleef dies. Since she’s an adult in Cataclysm, she’s probably pretty young here, and probably not even in the Deadmines.
As for the upcoming fight, I’m sure Hani can handle VanCleef easily, but that leaves Te and Areen to deal with his lackeys, and it seems like Tiny is out of tricks.
Not quite decided on Vanessa yet; like I’ve said earlier, I haven’t planned for her, so the only purpose it’d really serve is to give a nod towards events in Cataclysm. There’s a definitive limit to how much (and what) I can do with her due to what the situation will be, but we’ll see when we get there.
Actually *spoilers*, during some Alliance chain quest, you use something to observe the events of the Deadmines, and watch 5 Alliance soldiers kill Vancleef. After it’s done and they leave, you see Vanessa pop out with a tear jerking “Daddy…..”. Though her age is totally ambiguous due to Blizzard having all of 2 child models.
Actually, from what I read, Vanessa actually watched her father being attacked and killed by the players, so even if you dont show her in the comics it’d still make a bit of sense, cause shes not even seen in the actual Deadmines, probabally in some other room or lurking in the shadows.
That VanCleef family, vveerrryy sneaky :P
This is pretty much why I’m not certain whether I’ll offer a glimpse or not – obviously, the group effectively can’t notice her since between Areen and Te’len, there’s no way they’d leave a young child in such a place. (and the likelyhood of her going with the people who just killed her father is.. low)
I don’t have anything planned with her myself, so showing her really has no purpose other than just to give a nod to Blizzard in a “yes, she’s there” kind of way. So, still deciding whether that’d be interesting or not.
Besides, I’m not entirely sure what I’d make of her, since her timeline is.. weird. She’s shown as a little girl when her father dies, but an adult in Cataclysm: the “official” timeline gives her only three (four, at most) years to make that transition, which .. really isn’t enough. If we count more the passage of real time, presuming that VanCleef was killed around when World of Warcraft got started, it’s more around 6-7 years.. which fits a whole lot better.
Some NPCs in the beta states it has been 20 years since the start of the events in Outlands. So probably at least that from Van Cleef’s death -> Vanessa in Cataclysm.
20?! Sure they don’t mean the events of Beyond the Dark Portal (Warcraft 2) rather than the Burning Crusade with that? (still, that should be over 20 years..)
Do you have a direct quote/screenshot of what they say? Since every single reference I can find on the matter seems to suggest that Blizzard basically has each expansion be a year from the prior one, which really isn’t much time for someone to grow up in.
There’s an angry dwarf in HH that talks about being stranded in Hellfire for 20 years before the Dark Portal was reopened to allow us all in to kill mobs and get epic greens. So that’s 20 between WCII:Beyond the Dark Portal until BC.
oh, pretties! http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/story/timeline.html it doesn’t mention Cat yet, though.
Okay, I did a quick counting. Seeing how there’s two main timeline variants around, depending on whether World of Warcraft happened about 25 or 30 years after the Dark Portal first opened.. according to the former, there’s been 18 years between Beyond the Dark Portal and Burning Crusade; the latter says it’s been 23.
Both of them suggest it’s only 3-4 years at most between VanCleef’s death and Cataclysm.
Personally, I think they should’ve put more time between each expansion so events don’t end up so absurdly compressed, but that might just be me.
Worst comes to worst, we’ll just blame the Infinite Dragonflight for screwing with the time lines.
I dont usealy post this much, but looks like a lil bit more was added to her as well! http://www.wowwiki.com/Vanessa_VanCleef
hmm well we can alwasy to this show nothing now and when we meet here later we do an flash back back here and show her. easy enough maybe an bit cheap.
I’m sorry but…
Come on, he has the cape and everything!
On topic I loved how you did the cape and Vancleef’s intro. How did you do the cape anyway?
Hah! I’ll admit, I wasn’t at all thinking of Darth Vader.. interesting how well that comparison works in retrospect.
As for the cape.. seeing how people wanted a larger render of the last pane, I made a post regarding his design. It’ll mention where it came from.
I can actually imagine how VanCleef barge in at the scene with the Darth Vader-type of voice – and of course the heavy breathing – with the slow-mo version of the Darth Vader theme song playing in the background, now that you mentioned it. ^^
Nice look, VC.
o no captain angst is here run for your lives!
Love it!
Lol rampage this is just the warm-ups from their previous rampages.
