#287 – “And All is Possible”

Ever noticed how Areen carries around the insignia of the Lyran Commonwealth? I suppose the Lyran Wall of Text is just a variant of the Lyran Wall of Steel.

I question the brilliance of anyone who keeps a Warhammer in a knife fight with an Atlas. Sure, you can disengage the PPC inhibitors, but with barely more than half the armour and up against an AC/20, you really should be out to medium range at least. Now of course there’s the LRM to contend with at that range, but I’d rather take that scattered damage than dance up close with a gun that can trash all my armour in any single location but CT with just one hit.

    Are those warhammer 40k shenanigans?

Nope – BattleTech, from the sounds of it, or MW3 judging from his comment on the last comic ^.^

Like minouris says, it’s actually BattleTech – in this case a showdown between a 70-ton Warhammer and a 100-ton Atlas.

It struck me as a more positive ramble than once more going off on how only a few of the Paladins I’ve ever met struck me as the real deal.

This. This is being a Paladin of the Holy Light. I have some, but I wish I had many more like Areen in the Silver Hand.

      ;D

Always was what I was gunning for with Areen Lightspark, really – sure, she is a gnome and occasionally that’ll show by ways of her being somewhat excitable or having a somewhat different perspective. But the core part is that as a Paladin, she’s very much the Real Deal.

‘Tis the good un’s that show us what it’s really supposed to be, and the failures that tell us to shape up.

        Jolly good show, Nhani. \=)

MW3, right? So is the Warhammer in question the original, or the IIC? If the pilot’s anywhere near Clan standards, then they should be able to stay just ouside of the minimum range for their LRMs to get a lock whilst managing to stay out of the Atlas’s weapons arc… As long as they can stay one step ahead of the Atlas pilot so he/she can’t turn fast enough to get a bearing, then that Atlas has a legitimate reason to be very, very worried ^.^

I once wore down a Dire Wolf in a Grendel using that strategy. Took an age, but the victory was glorious! lol Of course, that Dire Wolf really oughtn’t have wandered into heavy woods…

    • October 17, 2011 at 02:26

(Ah, you specified melee range. Yes, your point is entirely valid :))

The old 2009 trailer for the 3015 reboot, actually, so we’re in the middle of the Third Succession War with an old WHM-6R against an AS7-D (the hud claims it as a -C, but the AS7-C is a Combine 3050-era lostech upgrade, and the AS7-D(C) is a Clantech upgrade following the Clan invasion in 3049, so it can’t really be either of those)

The Warhammer pilot probably isn’t among the greatest though, because the Atlas actually manages to sneak up on him. In his defense, it was using smoke for cover, but seeing how the Atlas is about as subtle as an anvil catapult that accompanies every launch with a drum solo, that’s still got to be rather embarrassing.

        In his defense.
        a) Urban environment, plays havoc on the scanners.

        b) He was kinda occupied with shooting at the Jenner and it blowing up.

        c) Considering his other foe was a light, you really wouldn’t expect the next mech to show up to be an Assault.
Another light or maybe a fast medium maybe. As the first ones into a city would tend to be a scout or skirmish mech. So even though he knew there was a second mech in the vicinity, it was reasonably logical not to be too worried about it.

Course having said that, moment he saw it, he should’ve chosen the better part of valour and gotten the hell out of Dodge, while screaming into his com channels that he’s got an Assault on his six. Around the time that he hid behind the building to avoid some of the fire, would’ve been a good time to bug out. He’s got the speed advantage. Even if it’s a measly 10.5 kph.

Side note, the chaps behind it are apparently going to make an announcement soon.
Been using twitter to show off bit and pieces of a picture.

Looks to be an Atlas, based on the arms and lower torso set up, in addition to the side gun. SRMs seem to be in the wrong spot though. Wonder if it may have been redesigned in look. Most likely the same was done with the Warhammer, because last I heard, HG was raising a stink about the Unseen again.

          October 22, 2011 at 10:22

The Atlas was never among the Unseen, mind, but redesigns do tend to happen. And looking over the armament, at a glance it seems to be a dead ringer for the Atlas AS7-D except that the LRM-20 in LT has been split into two LRM-10s across LT and RT (though much Atlas art depicts it like this), and the CT medium lasers are mounted forward rather than being rear-mounted.

The SRM-6 is still in LT where it’s always been and have just been moved up a bit so it actually can twist with the rest of the torso rather than hovering nebulously around the hip, so it all seems to fit. I’d be very surprised if it was something else.

At this point I’m more suspicious of the hinted but unspecified subtitle (and what the most obvious interpretation of it seems to be, and what that might mean for the overall result).

Ah, so those were LRMs on the shoulders. Rather reminded me of how they did the Reseen Warhammer, and how the SRM6 box was rotated from vertical to horizontal. So it initially looked like it had two SRM6s instead*, whereas the Torso one wasn’t visible in the picture that I saw. http://www.incgamers.com/images/screenshots/30256orig.jpg

*: Could’be been a new model type after all. One concentrating more on close range firepower.

And yeah, I know that the Atlas wasn’t an Unseen, should’ve phrased that better.

Meant it more along the lines of considering they probably had to rework the Unseen due to HG, they may have tinkered with the designs of some of the regular mechs as well, just because they were already going over the roster anyway.

Well MechWarrior 4 already reworked a few designs quite significantly all on its own (the Bushwacker and the Mad Dog/Vulture in particular) so it wouldn’t surprise me if the new release alters any – especially since the art style used in the TROs have also changed significantly over time with varying emphasis on shape or realism.

As for the Atlas, I have a more recent merge here and if you compare with an AS7-K, there’s a fair few various details, including weapons, which are all basically in the same general regions. You have the split LRM launcher, the lower LT SRM, the RT big gun (AC/20 for an AS7-D, Gauss Rifle for an AS7-K) and the arm lasers.

Of course, seeing how they’ve allegedly moved the game up from 3015 to around 3048, it could potentially be a Lostech rework of the -D.

Now imagine this Scene if it was the future-male-group-member… who for the sake of amusement, today will be an orc peon.

Te’Len: “Why? What makes you chose to fight”

    Peon: “Da’bo?”

Te’Len: “Do you ever worry about hurting the wrong people?”

    Peon: “Zugzug”

    Te’Len:” …. ”

Te*len: “I suppose ill just have to keep trying then”

    Peon: “Work work”

    Te’len: “Thanks Peon”

    Peon: “Lok’tar!”

… Also, MechWarrior ftw. Cant wait for the new game to come out… whenever that is. Quite enjoyed the Mechwarrior series. All the way from MW2: Mercenaries. Then Mw3. Then Mw4. Then Mw4: Mercenaries. All you need is a Daishi, max armorpoints tonnage, and then afew Autocannons ^^.

My favorite weight class is actually the Heavies, to be honest – it also holds some of the (to me) more iconic ‘mechs; you have the Mad Dog/Vulture and the Catapult towards the lower end of the bracket, and examples like the Marauder or the darling poster child Timber Wolf/Mad Cat at the high end. They’re light enough to still actually be able to move, but heavy enough to pack some serious weapons and at least some degree of armour. I recognize that the sheer amount of armour you can strap onto an Assault sometimes make them all but necessary in the face of battles of attrition, and I’ll admit that mediums can also be fun to pilot at times, but if I’m given a free choice, you’ll probably find me in a Heavy.

As an aside, if you haven’t tried the free MW4:Mercs release, I’d recommend giving it a spin – it comes with Mektek’s Mekpak 3.1 integrated (even into the singleplayer) plus both the Clan and IS Mechpaks included, so there’s an outright maddening amount of ‘mech chassis to choose from, including a few of the Unseen that otherwise haven’t made a show since MW2 for legal reasons, like the Warhammer, the Marauder and the Rifleman.

(Assume you’re referring to the mechwarrior reboot trailer that came out a while ago, man I haven’t seen any news on that game in ages. Is it still around?)

Yeah I agree the mechwarrior piloting the warhammer in that trailer was somewhat, well, incompetent. Just standing there trying to slug it out with an assault mech. Would have been rather easy to get out of LOS of the atlas in the urban terrain as well. Then you could get safely out of range of the atlas short range weaponary and wear it down by ducking in and out of cover taking advatage of the PPC’s long range/long recharge.

      October 17, 2011 at 15:06

That’d be the one. A friend and I ended up discussing the chances of a Warhammer up against an Atlas at close range in regards to that trailer after I started on a long ramble about this and that element of BattleTech.

Of course, running face first into an Atlas with a ranged heavy with (relatively) paper-thin armour in an urban environment is never going to be a happy thing – if you’re packing a single (or even double) UAC/20s then sure, just go up and give ‘ol uncle Atlas a big hug full of double-tap, but with a Warhammer, the very first thing you’ll want is range.

As for the new MechWarrior, they’re supposedly working towards making some announcement or other about n it sometime later this month or the next, so hopefully we’ll find out more about it soon enough. If you want to keep up to date with the developments on it, Mektek has a subforum dedicated to the elusive MechWarrior 3015, including threads where they keep an eye on developer blogs and twitters.

Oke… completely and uterly lost here. Don’t understand any of this, so I go with Loldrood. More wind-swept Te’len.

@Nhani You’ve inspired me to try my hand at a WoW comic strip too! I am basing it on my death knight and am doing it through screenshots and Photoshop. Let me know what you think. :)

      Not too shabby.

I liked the first one, then it went down a bit after that, but you picked up nicely with the trial and the ones after that, keep on improving like that….and ofcourse female Gnome is ‘win ! :-D

      • October 22, 2011 at 15:50

I appreciate the feedback :) The first three comics were done by screenshots, use of Wowhead’s armory, and masking. I ditched that technique as too rough.

After watching a machinima, I realized I could use the game’s ability to record movies for my character poses. From that point, it became an exercise in photography and film editing. :D

It’s remarkable how similar the motivations of Hani and Areen are, actually. Although on the face of it I suppose Hani’s out for her great priestess’ favour, I think it’s made quite clear that they just want to ‘do the right thing’, with the main distinguishing factor between them being “what the right thing is”.

Much as i love the warhammer, and it pains me to say, no way in hell i would go toe to toe with an atlas. now med range with cover and an extra med range rack , i have taken out an atlas on several occasions. know your mech, know your opponent. now if ya just gots to skermish with an atlas, i like madcat with jumpjets and lots of short range missles. DFA and dive for cover in the wake of a miiile barage, if your good and lucky you can score a kill by crushing the pilot and much bucks salvaging the hulk.
