#82 – “It’s a Common Mistake”

I part blame the late hour of this particular page on being social, part on fatigue. But it’s still sunday, so it’s not an absent update just yet!

Whenever someone makes a thread of some sort about hints or guidelines how to characterize a Night Elf, one of the top things on every list tends to be “You were not born in Teldrassil!”, so I ended up using that for random travel chatter. It was just how the dialogue evolved as I went at it, since it took a whole lot of thinking before I decided what the actual dialogue would be and what I wanted it to say. There’s still some hints, mentions and tidbits that I wanted in that I simply couldn’t fit without it seeming awkward that I’ll have to save for later.

One of the things I like about characterizing Night elves is the cultural gap – Humans, Dwarves, Gnomes and High elves are all rather familiar with eachother, leaving Night elves the odd ones out. Since we’re currently in Night elven lands, the cultural clash swings their way. Across the ocean, the situation would be quite the opposite.

came to think of it does kilts have a opening? thought they were like pair of kimono pants where you “jump down” in them (i lack a english word there)

also the cenarion circle located it darnassus is mainly ruled by Fandral Staghelm who is tbh kinda corrupt and would shake hands with a paladin and Hani seem to be loyal to Tyrande doubt he’ll like that XD

overall gonna be fun to see how the circle react to this party ^^

Kilts don’t, I think – but kilts in the strict meaning of the word are also only about knee length, I believe. With Te’len’s redesign, I made the front bit of her skirt a loose flap, rather than the whole skirt being a tube – largely for aesthetic reasons. By being as it is now and letting her legs poke through, it both gives her a certain kind of theme and impression about her, as well as preventing the skirt from stretching or deforming in all manner of twisted ways when she runs or otherwise moves her legs.

As for the Cenarion Circle, Te’len being rather novice-y I figure her first port of call to report to might be Mathrengyl Bearwalker. Though I’m sure the stop by there could still have interesting potential.

if her “kilt” stays like that and she drops by eastern kingdom she’ll haven a legion of young men and dorfs (and whack gnomes) running after her ^^

I have to admit, It finally hapenned. After months and months of reading and adoring your comic, Hani finally made a pun that made me groan. Not that it’s a bad thing, it’s just…oooooh!!!

Heh i liked it, I find myself really likeing haveing the band together again, with one addition ofcause. But still, good to see ^^.

Also i have to agree with “Elveswarrior” … if she comes walking in that thing, she will get zerged bigtime… That is unless hani finds herself finemane leggings, in which case the nature of this comic is going to change dramaticly >.>… Anyways, should be fun to see, Tiny would most likely scare the heck out of anyone whod try to put a finger on Te’len. At any rate, maby we will find out more of Hani when they reach Darnassus. I hope so atleast.

Appart from a rough idea when Teldrassil was planted, we don’t really have any solid numbers when the actual cities were grown or when they were officially populated or any of the sort – meaning that the cities or the populaces may very well have been there only half as long as the tree itself. Combine this with the highly compressed time frame we’re given and the fact that neither Darnassus nor Teldrassil look all that new, and it’s pretty obvious why it’s a common mistake to make. More so with the feeling I’ve gotten from some quests that sometimes even the quests themselves seem to forget Teldrassil has been around for less than a decade.

For Night elves and how their childhoods play out – we don’t know. The first sourcebook gave us one number for length (that was already long), the second sourcebook all but trippled it, with neither explaining what exactly they’re doing during all those years. Beyond the Tree is largely following the first number if pressed for one since it simply seems to make more sense – ultimately though.. in this context it doesn’t really matter.

In the end, we have to accept that this is a throwaway phrase tossed by chronic snarker Rei Tiny to placate the ignorance of a human male who understandably hasn’t had or taken the time to learn the history of the place he’s in. I think she’s more interested in making it biting than factual ;)
