#84 – “They’re Not Gonna Take It”

Combat is always a quirky thing to use in Beyond the Tree, not only because of trying to maintain atleast some level if internal choreography, but also because there’s always the nagging question of what the point is with a particular page is. Battles are certianly a key element of the setting (and even some characters), but fighting for fighting’s sake feels like just a prettier way of writing “They had a Fight. The Heroes Won.”, which aside from the visuals actually isn’t all that interesting. As a result, most fights so far either have puns, jokes or character moments so they provide something more than just the visuals.

I’d planned to go with more cultists, but in the end three turned out to be enough. It wasn’t and didn’t need to be some kind of larger scale battle, just a short and simple clash. Additionally, I found having more than just the duo doing the fighting good practice for when we have a larger travelling contingent and they might all be expected to atleast have something to do.

this is the first time i noticed Nila had a dagger (not much of a fighter)

a slight comment would maybe be that the human hani grabs in last picture doesnt really look like he care about he being grabbed XD maybe haved added that he gribbed aat hanis’ arm thats holding his troath could have made it a bit more lively

    Cool stuff.

Elves, it’s because he’s dead. Look at panel 6.

In all fairness, she’s only had the dagger since her recent model update – I wanted some kind of equipment on her that seemed fitting without detracting from the overall feel, and ended up settling for the most utilitarian-looking knife I could find. The idea is that it’s not really a weapon so much as a tool.

And yes, he’s quite dead. He even has a struggling face and all for the pane where he’s stabbed, but due to the perspective we don’t see that. I’d planned for it to be more visible, but the pane layout worked a bit against me. Ultimately, I think if he’d still been struggling by the second last pane, it’d detract from what I actually want you to notice in it.

I love that look on the 7th square. Also i never did consider her much of a fighter either. So its fun to see her cover her eyes while holding the dagger, poor thing. Good that she has a pro with her *grins*. Good page, you did a nice job with keeping the fun in it while still haveing the combat element. Tought im not supprised, you got talent! (as has been said before)

Stupid question: is this a reference to the Twisted Sister song called We’re Not Gonna Take It?

(Damn good combat scene, kudos for it!)

Great comic book, I really enjoy it. If WoW as a game was more like this (graphic included) I might still be playing it.

Keep up the good work :)

It’s a reference to the song, yes – not sure how actually fitting it is, but I like song references. They’re fairly simple to make and can often be interpreted in any number of ways.

I’ve never actually played any of the Jak and Daxter games, so I wouldn’t know the simularities. Wouldn’t suprise me if they’re there though – I think the base archetypes are fairly straightforward.

And as always, I’m glad people are enjoying it! I do have concerns at times about how well things will work and what’ll come across and not. If people like it, then it’s atleast acomplished that! ;)

In art, your greatest critic (enemy) is yourself. Both a curse and a blessing, with it you constantly get on your own nerves and without it your artistic skills wouldn’t evolve.

PS shouldn’t Ironhammer (or-what’s-his-name) be swinging his weapon with both hands in panel 2? Battle hammers are quite heavy stuff that you need powerful control over if you’re gonna’ hit your foes and not your friends.

    And, have a waffle

I’d intended for him to swing it with both hands, actually – hence the leap. But.. have you looked at the two hand swing animations for human males? He kept squatting! And I decided him sitting down and doing an ankle bash just didn’t cut it. So rather than trying to work around it, I went with the simplest choice and hoped it’d fit well enough. (Besides, I can always make an excuse how he’s already just holding the hammer one-handed anyway)

no it isnt some keylogger or something silly as that just a plain pic of jak n daxter to show the similarity. the kind of humor is also a bit alike

ps. i love jak n daxter so keep it up ^^

agree but i haven’t had mind to say that but i agree with Elveswarrior that in fact
Rei and Hani reminds an lot about jak and dexter.
hani the larger one is serious most of the time wile Rei the tiny one is more of an pun and fun.
hers an wiki link for info about jak and daxter…
obvious that old wiki did have info about this.

Right, just as a FYI – there won’t be any update today (thursday). I’ve been trying to find the focus for it, but it’s simply eluded me – combining that with the fact that I had a smaller test tomorrow that I needed some last minute memorizing for and it just hasn’t been done. Sorry about that. Unless I somehow remain an absolute cognitive wreck and find coherent thought impossible throughout the entire weekend, you’ll see #85 on sunday instead. Sorry about that.
