#92 – “Clash of the Titans”

And thus we board the express train headed straight from bad to worse.

The dialogue for this page wasn’t nearly as straightforward as I’d initially expected – both because Fandral Staghelm and Rei Tiny are much different in the way they approach things, and because I didn’t really want a clear winner out of their little.. talk. Of course, in the end I think it’s more Te’len’s performance that sells the overall scene, rather than theirs.

Lighting interiors are strange, I’ve found – for some reason, it seems characters and interior spaces are exposed to light in a much different manner, every so often resulting the characters either looking unexpectedly dark or the background looking strangely bright. I’m not entirely sure what causes it, though I have a few theories. In the end, I think the problem really is that while there might be a few different methods for how to light a scene properly.. the method I use actually isn’t among them.

Ha, I love Te’len’s face in the second panel. And is it just me, or is she shorter than usual? Or is she crouching or something?

if we’re lucky or love arch druid just bought an express ticket to the healers of Darnassus which ironicly is under tyrandes command XD

and you’re out early today :)

That’s actually due to the way the floor is – the part of it where Te’len and Mathrengyl stand is one step lower than the part that Hani (for most part) and Staghelm stand on. I just used it and didn’t really think about it, and in hindsight there’s no shot that actually shows that the floor is laid out like that. I usually avoid the ground perspective since that makes it easier to cut in backgrounds, but it’s less helpful when it might actually be important! *cough*

My bad. I blame strange night elven architecture.

And this is a rather busy week for me, so I made sure both pages were ready in advance. I like to keep that habit, but you know how it is. xD

Og god… He insulted Tyrande… This is just bad… BAD :P… I mean, LOOK at hani’s face! she is about to go ape-wall on that druid -.-‘

However i do love these little conflicts, and rei vs staghelm. HAH! god thats epic :P
Also, i love the second panel, both Te’len and Bearwalker going “oh boy…”.

Great page, looking very much forward to the next!

I just hope she have enough self control not to draw her sword, that could get quite messy. On top of that I don’t think Hani needs headhunters tracking her down on top of everything.

Oh, and I kinda like the dark look the lightning gave Tiny. It fits her, despite her lack of actual seize.

Ta’len standing a but lower only enforces the feeling that she’s begging Hani to make Tiny shut up.

oh dear, shit is astronomically about to hit the fan.

i really can’t imagine any way this isn’t gonna end up messy.

and guys, i really don’t think you need to worry ’bout ol’ staghelm too much. he is the arch druid after all, hani is in deep trouble if she draws her blade on him. wich, unfortunately, is the only solution i can imagine for this situation.

in early wow when you could become an outlaw I made one and got some other outlaw warriors and killed staghelm… they only fought him to protect me. hani and tiny are outlaws almost and the sentinels would probably help hani if it got bad enough

Heh, I actually cannot imagine Hani committing violence in the middle of Darnassus, risking the frowning, disapproving look of Tyrande once she gets, well, thrown at her feet.

Unless she’s desperately seeking a way to glance at that face, but I highly doubt it :P My bet would be on a straight exit and a life long grudge (or rather, very long… let’s use life-long stuff scarcely where night elves are involved), leading towards the unvealing of several dirty facts about that dirty archdruid, due to more excessive poking around than they’d otherwise do.

Or of course, she could just give him smack-bottom. *whistles and think a bit more about alternatives*

so sentinels hepl outlaws rather then the arch druid, leader of the cenarion circle and a very important person to night elf society?

Derrael, the point brought across by WoWplayer’s comment was a gameplay thing that would happen during alpha/beta of the original game.

An answer for both of you, it probably wasn’t even intended in the first place that the sentinels help in that fight when such actions were possible within the game’s engine.

I imagine Hani placing a perfect kick to the Arch druids jibblies *choughs* and then legs it straight to the port. but then again there are other possibilities to make him pay for that comment *laughs*

Outstanding work with the comic Nhani, it’s fantastic =)
im looking forward to the next page =D

All good, just wanted to clear it up, didn’t mean anything bad by it. x3

Also, I keep reading this page over and over because it is full of so much awesome. :P

I do wish she would kill Staghelm though… I have always strongly disliked him as a person(not as a character) for constantly insulting Tyrande… I cried when I got my black war bear when we killed Tyrande :(

  17. 17 Derrael
    March 13, 2009 at 21:29

I don’t think she could kill him… He is the arch druid after all, wields very powerful magic and since he is over 9000 years old I bet he’s got a trick or two up his sleeve.

  18. March 14, 2009 at 00:14

    Another great page,..
    well done.

Ok,..time for my little contribution in the speculation about what will happen next,…
i imagen Hani turning around, looking all pissed off,..
Walking toward him realy fast while scolding him for that last remark, realy giving him a piece of her mind,.. making him back into the wall, but not realy atacking him.

He might be the arch druid,.. but seeing a clearly pissed off Hani storming at you while she is yelling at you, will most likely cause anyone (even the arch druid) to take a step back,..
especially becaue he wouldn’t expect anyone to get in his face like that,..

I’d say he’s seen thing lot more menacing then angry Hani, even tho Angry Hani is a rather unsettlig tought. And for what I’ve seen so far, Hani isn’t really one for scolding people, she has much more tendency for action. And tho Staghelm might not expect anyone to get up on his face, he wouldn’t stand for that either. You mess with Staghelm, you’ll get the horns. (okay that was BAD, even by my standards, I apologize) Fandral might be a grumpy old man, but he knows his place and it’ll take more then a angry elf lady *cough*demon*cough* to make him back down.

I laughed so hard at that last panel. However, lets hope Hani keeps her head, if she really wants to look out for the High Priestess.

Personally I love the fact that Tiny is taking center stage in this encounter: there’s a lot of personality in the exchange and she isn’t simply playing a dramatic/comedic foil to Hani. I also like the fact that Te looks genuinely appalled/affronted and not simply shocked. Tiny is walking over something that, no matter how much of a jerk Staghelm behaves, is important to her: I think there’s been a undercurrent of condescension in the way Tiny treats Te’len. Te is very sweet, but I wonder and sort of hope she will confront Rei after this, since there’s a clear gap between their childhood and their reunion that could be explored and because Te’len has a lot of inner strength and bravery to my mind.

My impression, with respect to Fandrel’s power base, was that he is a very experienced druid who can wield considerable power, that might also be looked up to in a time of conflict (it’s not clear that the final incident at the Sealing of the gates was widely witnessed or reported; indeed he won a victory despite the considerable hardship of losing his son). Also that he has a powerbase within the Cenarion Circle (presumably among those who opposed Tauren membership) with enough material power to grow Teldrassil without the explicit agreement of the entire Circle.

It has always seemed to me that Teldrassil’s creation was an issue that was politically forced. I suspect that Tyrande felt obliged to support him after the fact, out of fear of disunity in the face of rapid change, since Teldrassil is clearly a bulwark the more conservative and isolationist cling to in order to turn back the clock. That’s not to say all Druids supporting him will be jerks too: I think there are many who might be swayed by the argument of the conservatives that the world “needs” it’s immortal caretakers to safeguard it from calamity, and who may also respect the Archdruid for his experience, power and the sacrifices he’s suffered (what better excuse for his bitterness), even if they may not agree with the letter of what he says.

  21. March 14, 2009 at 11:42

owww,.. don`t get me wrong Derrael,..
I don’t think that the arch druid would be scared of Hani.
But it is a very natural responce that if soneone just turns around and starts yelling at you, scolding you and phisicly getting in your face, that you take a step back.

And come on,.. give Hani some credit here,..
she might be an expert fighter who can take out a small army on her own,…
but she also knows when not to fight.

and even though she doesn’t talk to much, she does have a way with words.
we have seen her jousting words with Tiny and even win on occasion.

If she can controle her anger and choose the right words, she could leave “mister high and mighty” feeling very tiny (sorry Rei, no pun intended)
Even though he would recover quickly, Hani and company could be long gone by then.

  22. March 14, 2009 at 11:48

i do know that this is very unlikely to happen.
as it was already stated : “And thus we board the express train headed straight from bad to worse.”

so i don’t think Hani will just be able to walk away from whatever she decides to do.

    but still,..
i would love to see someone put that arch druid in his place.
so i guess it`s just wishfull thinking on my part

  23. 23 Derrael
    March 14, 2009 at 14:30

well yes, Hani indeed knows when to battle or not, but Staghelm just insulted Tyrande wich pretty much should put Hani in berserk mode.

and normally yes, the natural response is to take a step back when someone gets on your face, but there are some people who don’t, and seeing how Staghelm is rather secure of his own position in Darnassus I’d say that he’s gonna stand his ground. besides, during the 9000 years he’s been around, he’s propably learned when to back down and when to stand your ground, and a ex-sentinel, fearsome as she may be, getting up on his face calls for the latter.

but we’ll see what happens tomorrow.

  24. 24 Weertangel
    March 14, 2009 at 16:18

I personally think (hope) that he gets a punch in the face and while he’s recovering on the ground Hani will yell his head off about daring to insult tyrande!! Afterwards(or during it) Te’len faints and get expelled from the circle be staghelm, or something like that while Tiny says something like “i saw that one coming”

Or Hani gives him an uppercut(mortal combat style) and calls it a day.

Well, I’d like to say I’ve been following this discussion with great interest. It’s been fun to see the various interpretations people come up with and compare that to what my scripts/plans have in mind so far. Plus, some of the remarks have been quite epic in their own. xD
