#103 – “Who Watches..”

Late page is late, also serious page is serious! *cough* I found the ocean travel rather convenient for this kind of character dialogue since it’s isolated, and with the characters being seperated by internal strife, it even offers space to work with them individually, rather than as a unity. I found this page rather interesting – albeit difficult – to concoct; the script is quirky in that while the dialogue is about Hani Foonmall, the page itself is not. Making dialogue where the point isn’t what the dialogue says about the topic but about the person saying it is somewhat odd, and I’d imagine it’ll be up to anyone but me to decide whether it’s successful or not.

I also randomly noticed halfway through that the ship sails were still hidden, prompting a re-render of half the panes – which also made me notice that the previous two pages also didn’t have sails showing at the time. Eheh.. oops? I’m sure there’s some convenient nautical reason as to why they might’ve had their sails retracted in the previous pages, but the real reason is because I forgot they existed and thus forgot making them visible.

Again, another one leaving me wanting more! Keep up the great work.

One thing, pane 9 I think is an amazing shot of Te, use it as a poster perhaps? *expectant puppy dog eyed face*

Agreed, every page always makes me curious for the next one.
…What else can I say? You’ll be getting tired by “Keep up the good work” spam perhaps, although people are right. It’s my favourite webcomic. Not that I read many different ones, but still! I’ll follow the adventures of Hani and Tiny until the very end. ^^

must agree with people the 8th panel really is a great shot of miss nila and the larger version only made it better :D

forgetting sails on the sailboat… is it worse to forget ammunition to your gun as a hunter? ><

Alright, alright! Larger version it is. Had to be tweaked somewhat as the pose was never really complete before, so hopefully it won’t have sacrificed anything in said tweaks. If I’m incoherent either here or in that post it’s because I’m admittedly rather sleepy right now.

Aaand it seems it was found before I even had time to post this comment. Oh well!

I find your ploy of revealing via dialog works. It doesn’t really matter what the target of their discussion is, this little talk sheds more light on Tee and Te’s personalities. I like it ,-)

I’ve been reading the comic for some time when I came here intially I did it from the start to the point it finished. I am really impressed by the depth of the charcterisation. I am not an artist nor would I claim to have any techincal knowledge. But the way in which both Hani and Tiny interact with each other and the banter that goes on between them makes me laugh out loud hard.

I also like Nila as well because she gives a sense of vunribilty but I also thing that there is a strong headed person there but she needs to find her own feet and I am sure when she does and the time comes who ever is on the wrong end of her better look out!

Nhani thankyou for sharing this work in progress with me. I am as a writer of some degree very imnpressed and having read a lot of web comics yours has got itself a place in my favourites and I am sure your sick of people saying “Keep up the good work” but please do!

And yeah Stanghelm dersrved the punch I have massvie urge to smack him more so because being london born and bred he would strike me as needing some sense knocked into that egotistcal head of his. So good for Hani on that. Apolgies for that getting in here but I felt it best said here than bumping the page up on which it was done.

I will be reading this comic week in week out to come however long it lasts.

Tiny is excellent at holding a grudge. *nods* I rather like how none of the characters can really be trusted to tell things as they really are – they’re all biased and limited in their insight. I find that one of the fun things in their characterization.

They’re called sheaths, and yes – it’s made from a quiver. It seemed like the easiest solution available and I found it worked fairly well. In fact, with patch 3.1, Blizzard themselves retooled a quiver into a backpack for the squire models, even. So it’s not a solution without merit.

Well to be fair, the amount of World of Warcraft-themed webcomics (or webcomics period) listed on Wikipedia is really minute, and really only cover the ones that garner the significant amount of attendance, fandom and fame to warrant it. For all its finding an audience, Beyond the Tree is nowhere near that kind of scale! xD

Realistically speaking, I don’t think Beyond the Tree is all that famous – there’s definitely people keeping tabs on it of course, but it’s hardly explosively followed and is only sparcely linked to; the only World of Warcraft-related webpage I know of that keeps regular tabs on it would be the european World of Warcraft community page that links to it on occasional fridays. It still has a whole lot more attendance than I would’ve envisioned when I started so I’m not complaining, but I harbor no illusions of being anywhere near the big names either! Of course, it isn’t helped by the fact that I’ve spent little to no effort of advertising or otherwise announcing it – I’ll admit I feel a tad awkward about the idea of yelling out loud for everyone to come looking.

I do think Beyond the Tree can be a little hard to get into for people – exposition is largely snuck in in small peices at a time, there’s little direct punchline-based or directly game humour to go around and most of it is about the characters and what they’re like, and that’s not something you just pick up from them at a glance.

You should yell out loud for everyone to coume looking. Honestly, you’ve made BtT a really wonderful story, with dashing graphics. The many people that could find your comic via a shout or two, will be grateful!

First I love your comic, the best of all that I keep an eye on.

Second, I apologise in advance for what I’m about to say.
In the larger version of the 9th panel, I found the color to be to much in the red spectrum. the pale color of the original made her look, well, a bit more stern, more expression. it made her more alive than the larger version.

Also I would have turned Tiny around to face us (I sort of like Tiny :).

Of course all of those are personal opinion and do not affect the fact that I love your work, and i’ve been a fan from the start, (well almost, I was there from page 10 :)

Looking forward to your next instalment.

    Keep up the good work

Pft, I don’t mind constructive criticism – I know I’m hardly perfect and in spite of trying, I don’t always catch everything and don’t always consider every possible alternative. Of course, some things I simply don’t know how to fix (like thumbs!) but still.

I actually put a light specifically to make her a little more pink-ish for the large version – the light largely to create a few shadows that I felt were missing (but ended up being cut anyway, blargh!) and the colouring because it generally works better with her skin tone I find. Though It does seem to make her eyes appear a little oddly – I still need to look into what I can do with those. I’ll also admit that I actually never understood what people found appealing with that particular shot, so I may have made a mess of it when scaling it up. xD

For her expression, I actually intended her to look more pensive than anything – the script denotes her.. well.. dialogue for that pane as going Te’len: “…”, which doesn’t exactly say all that much. That said, there’s a whole lot of sudden realization and understanding that I wanted happening behind those eyes of hers – she makes a choice right there, and I’d say that’s where she stops being just escorted around and finally decides – by necessity or otherwise – to become part of the group.

As for what that actually leads to, we’ll just have to see, won’t we? ;)

Oh and for Yerdiss – i actually don’t know where I’d start yelling out about it, nevermind I feel incredibly self-concious when considering it. xD
I’ll admit I’m not all that good at promoting things, heh. I did manage to poke the european World of Warcraft community team about it once (hence why they pick it up every so often) and wrote the Wowwiki entry. Other than that, I boggle in the dark.
