#114 – “It’s the Little Ones..”

I know, I know – Late update is late. It took me forever to get started, and even then I managed to keep push it up until evening. I blame heat and stress. In any order. Anyhow.

Originally, as in months ago, the plan was that the duo go into the Cathedral along with Te’len, despoit her there to look through their archives for any information and then go prowl around for awhile until they finally returned to pick up Te’len again. With the additional travelling cast members we’re picking up reduced from three to one and the plot massively reshuffled.. I first decided it’d be better to simply have Te’len along for the journey, especially as I’ve grown quite fond of her. Then, of course, came this little change.

The duo really had nothing to do inside the Cathedral. They’re not very good at standing still and quiet – or atleast, Tiny isn’t all that good at the quiet part. With that in mind.. I figured it’d be better to let them stay outside and.. well, the rest came on its own.

    omg! Classic!

5th tile: Te’len is all like: Eh? …

Rei sure loves kids, she’d be a great mother ;p surprised Hani just kept quiet throughout the incident ;)

Cute kids: kind, sweet and non bratty ^^ <3

The visual juxtaposition is also lovely, especially considering the "tree" comments. Plus it makes my heart a little weak when Te' adopts a more "dignified" expression x3 (see also: this week's incentive)

    Fun page. ^_^

I like that Hani seems almost completely indifferent to the children, whereas Tee is stressing herself in finding an insult that they wouldn’t be oblivious to.

Aww, Rei with kids <3 so cute, and i do like that look Te'len gives them at frame-5…

Im gunna have to agree on the fact that the party works really well with Te'len, seeing just how she is that balanced person comparet to silent Hani and … well ´teh Rei´ :p … its cute in its own way. And another aspect i like is how the kids really say what kids would say, i mean… the adults go "what in the world is that on your shoulder?" in a much more questionlike state, were as kids just take what they know "Are you a farie" or "are you a nightelf kid" etc, just turn the page of the guessing book and keep em going.

Another fun thing i noted in this and the last page is the real size of Nightelfs compared to humans.

I like it ^^ even with the blond girl going x3 times :P but yea the kids of wow dont give much varriation to begin with, so i dont blame you for the Triplets girls or x2 pacs of Twin boys at all :P

Hmm, would be fun to see nightelf kids compared to an adult human- scale. The would most likely be like… what.. Chest hight`?

Great humorous page! 5th tile gave me the impression of: ‘ah, how cute.’ Te’len has really proven herself a miracle with faces, as you have proven yourself a miracle at making them. Just love the expression =), can’t help it. Continue the great work!

*chuckles* ah how i´d love to see Tiny turn the children into bark *smirks* that said those little pesks are untouchable unlike other npc’s while raiding… Gesh blizz if you raid something to just wreak mayhem ofcourse you go for the children to hinder their future! pfft… And besides their blood makes perfect ink for demonic summonings and other rituals.

Though admitedly this made me smile really did. <3 Tiny xD

in the last panel, Tiny’s facial expression makes me think that she wants to eat the kids. it’s a weird ”children… good with cream sauce..” snarl.

I must say that I am thoroughly enjoying this comic! The expressions are priceless! However, I DO have to ask…are we ever going to find out (in due course, I know) what happened to Rei that she is the size that she is?

    • 20 Nhani
      May 30, 2009 at 10:59

Most likely not. In the vein of Mrs. Columbo, Tiny’s size is one of those mysteries I think is better off hinted at but never quite explained in full. I do have plenty of ideas of what kind of hints I’m thinking of dropping to suggest what might have happened just for the sake of tickling curiosities.

Don’t expect an actual straight-up answer though, because I think the series is actually probably better off without ;)

    May 30, 2009 at 10:44

Walker some things tells me that even Nhani don’t knows the answer on that question.
so maybe maybe not depends on if she can make up one and let us shear it or if she leave that as many other do on many other subjects.

((something tells me that only the first half us understandably.))
    ((edit forgot the imported don’t))

Somehow, I am under the impression Tee actually enjoyed the kids, though she’d prolly never admit to it. It seems to me that, ironically, much of Tee’s (not quite social) behaviour would be explained if it were a defense mechanism that’s triggered by character traits that kids simply do not (yet) display.

I’ll skip any further elaboration on this statement, to avoid “Block of Text crits you for…” ,-)

I find aside from the obvious traits of personal likes/dislikes of the kids, that what really caught my eye in the last few pages if the actuel size diffrence between humans and elfs, and when looking at Hani in the midst of the kids, i was wondering how tall a nightelf kid would be compared to an adult human. Prop chest or such, yet when playing the game, one fancies to miss the little details these days, sizes is a fun thing.. i recall the “good old days” when as a horde in a pvp the worst to meet was a gnome with world enlarger… you just couldnt manuely click the sucka :P.. These days you miss how such little things really play in, causs they dont much, everyone is just a wall of armour and magical effects. Somehow, in writeing and realiseing this, i miss some of those missing abilities to set yourself aside in the world of Azeroth.. I think thats also part of why this comics so great, Nhani is good at createing that feeling of individuality and racial distinguishes, a thing thats been lost along time i find on RP servers. Now with the game so well connected via routes and ships, its nolonger an “epic” trip from Darnassus to Ironforge or stormwind, just a boattrip. Ofcause this adds to the fact of the alliance being more then a “fling of the moment” thing, but a coalition which will remain for the time being.

However! enough rant, back to comicy stuffs!

I agree with Yerdiss, i do think tiny likes the kids. Maby she finds in them something of a comfort or reminder of times past, when everything werent hard and you could “be a kid” and ask odd questions and be rather ignorant of the answer… come to think of it, Rei may act more childish then “grown up” (no pun intentded ;P) at times, her quick remarks and often rather direct questions are much like those children will ask. … Okay i think my rants are getting out of hand, so ill end it off with that i LOVE panel 5 of Te’len. Its so … i dont know how to say it, but i love it! not as a comical thing, but as a “… OMG I LOVE IT KK GIVE PLX K” thing.

    *nods sagely*

I love this page! One of the best so far in my opinion. I do have one question, why do the kids keep mentioning their mothers when they live in an orphanage? I’m presuming those kids are from there. :S

    • 26 Nhani
      May 31, 2009 at 09:36

…That’s an excellent question! The simplest answer I have is that when I first came up with the page (and the bulk of the dialogue) I thought of the wandering school class that traverses the streets. Then I realized it made more sense to just to apply it to the orphanage, and it totally skipped my mind how that made the mother references invalid.

      My bad.

    May 31, 2009 at 11:27

Well, you could excuse yourself with one thing. An adoptive child for example, also calls his/her adoptive mother, mother. In this case, it could be possible that mother is refered to as the orphanage mother. This would make it quite logical for some kids to call her mother, just because they barely have memory of their true mother as an orphan.

    There’s always a way out ;-)

  25. 28 Yerdiss
    May 31, 2009 at 14:19

The mother reference actually seemed very natural to me. Many different ways to explain it. I’d guess an orphan would refer more to the things they remember of their parents. Otherwise, it’s possible that childeren of the neighbourhood play with children of the orphanage. It needn’t be “Only orphans”. Thirdly, the reference to the matron as ‘mother’ came to mind. All in all, I agree with Udun-Khadgar, there’s always a way out ;)

  26. May 31, 2009 at 20:26

    Awww, sweet.
    One of my fav’s aswell.
Kinda reminds me of my Gf’s undead warlock when we rp in the orphanage or the children’s week when you have to lead children around.

T’was very subtle but Hani’s expression of befuddlement in panel 4 looking down at the kids — especially the one who asked if she was the mother of Tiny — is excellent. Children seem to be so far out of Hani’s world (one of violence quite often) that she really doesn’t seem to have a clue as to how to interact with them, hence silence and standing relatively still (and unthreatening) while letting Tiny do all the talking.
