#116 – “Gone in a Flash”

I know it’s a tad late – my clock just passed midnight at that; converting, furnishing and lighting the tavern setting took alot more time and effort than I expected, and I was interrupted halfway through for a few hours. Nonetheless, it’s finally up and ready. The lighting is a tad off in places, but I’ve never quite gotten the hang of lighting quasi-dark (or even interior) areas – not when multiple locations all need to be lit. Something I might figure out eventually, I suppose.

I normally don’t really mention cameos that loudly – I tend to prefer just passing them by and seeing if anyone catch them. This time however I felt I wanted to bring it to light since I had an absolute blast with it. Though the centerpoint in this particular page (appart from introducing our reoccuring barmaid with accent) was highlighting the idea of resources and that they’re more of an issue across the sea, I had no problem at all with dedicating over half of it towards making the most of a certain drunken mage.

Yay for the barmaid! The page has a good atmosphere, btw :) You’ve chosen your camera angles very well! And of course, whenever the locale is comfy, the topic of conversation is not *snickers* Glad to see the duo/trio can’t dodge that bullet.

a bit of physics? here. that bread tiny is holding in the last image. isnt that a bit to big to hold in one hand for her? o.O we’re talking about a bread slice half her size and almost as thick as her.

besides that good job on page once again :)

The bottom end of the slice is (or should be) actually resting on her legs, so she doesn’t need to hold it up – just steady it. That said, bread (atleast of that colour) usually isn’t particularely dense, so I suspect it’d be like holding a foam or honeycomb mattress.

Just because Tiny is well…tiny doesn’t necessarily mean she’s light or weak, she could be just as strong and heavy as when she was large..(normal sized?), though the way Hani carries her around on her shoulder 90% of the time suggests she can’t be all that heavy.

While I try to avoid the more fiddly details of it (since, let’s face it, we’re talking about someone who’s somehow shrunk to 1/4’th size without suffering any adverse effects), I generally think of Tiny’s weight and abilities in terms of typical story analogues than science and physics. She could carry apples or small rocks around if she gets a good enough grip, so she’s likely relatively stronger than she would be at full size. Conversely, I tend to think of her as relatively lighter too, putting her weight more like that of a small cat than the whole 1/4’th of her full size weight (which would be quite a bit heavier).

You won’t see her swing a full size sword or carry people around, but I consider her perfectly able of things like lifting apples, throwing small rocks and wrestling rats.

comparing with hani id say she is more then just 1/4 size :) and she could have been unusualy strong to start with which means shes unusual strong for a 1/4 sized nelf.

thou id like to see her empty one of those mugs if its wine there is in them XD

Once again a great page, and as that goes with magical shrinkage, you don’t really know what is shrinking allong. As with Rei, she shrunk in size and weight, and a bit in strength. But compared with the size and weight shrinkage, her strength has not decreased that much, making her strong for her size.

P.S. Deep inside I still think the size of Gnomes is just because of a failed experiment, making them shrink. This could explain the relatively great strength of gnomes, compared to their size (, and it gives me a reason to compare Gnomes with Tiny, cause if both have been shrinked by an unknown cause, the strength issue for both is solvable in the same way =P).

Well, a smaller frame gives greater proportionate skeletal strength (one of the issues with gigantism is that human/mammalian bone structure is far weaker in supporting larger bodies). Also, as Tiny is lighter, she’d have a lower mass for her muscles to act upon and lower terminal velocity; all of which adds up to make her proportionately more resilient/stronger/able to withstand falls, compared to full size humans. This is generally true of smaller mammals :)

I love the comic as ever, and thought that the lighting juxtaposed with the money/drunken mage/accented bar maid, was a very effective way of establishing an “other” sense of place :)

Great page! looks very good! and the money issue had to come up sooner or later anyway;)
Besides, it makes a great story hook, couse now they have to look for work, witch can only mean 1 thing! Adventuring!! Maybe go clear Westfall from the Defias? would be nice to see :) just to see Tiny’s reaction when they encounter a Harvest golem :)

wait Night elf money work in SW… they must had visit an bank somewhere.
and there is only one line that supports that there is different money in wow what i know.
and thats an Tuskar vendor Voice file when opening the trade window.
“tuskar- says your money is welcome, even out here” if i remember correctly.
and and only me or did i notis that hanny still have the murloc bunty or what ever it is that
she still haven’t collected from the beginning of the series.
Nhani sometime i think an referents link might be useful.

I think gold is a fairly universal currency in the Warcraft universe – even excluding the game mechanical aspect – considering the goblin trade princes and everything. The only direct case I know of someone actually using another type of currency is the Sporeloks of Sporeggar who use glowcap mushrooms – and directly reference it by saying something like “We’ve seen you use shiny metal for trade, we use shiny mushrooms, we are not so different.”.

And yes, Tinys’ remark in the second pane is a direct pike at Hani never bothering to actually pick up the reward for slaying Murkdeep. Of course, the obvious follow-up question there is why didn’t she.

I generally only provide direct links back to prior events in comments – while it’d be easy to provide a handy list what everything refers to, I think it’d take something away too; I’ve gotten the impression that one of the things that make Beyond the Tree stand out is how it actually doesn’t leave you with absolute answers – just a whole lot of suggestions, references and implications. That doesn’t mean I’m above nudging people the right way, just that I like giving them time to figure things out on their own first ;)

Great Site! As mentioned by Yerdiss, the atmosphere is fantastic.

btw, isn’t that barmaid the human girl with the Moonkin-dolls?

    June 9, 2009 at 20:48

she looks like the girl on that wallpaper with Tyrande :-) but i do remember a maid in a certain SW inn, forgot the name of that place though :p

PS: are those spelling errors intentional? because every word that’s supposed to start with a “w” she says with a “v”

The Barmaid(tm) resides somewhere in the space between cameo and support character – most of the wallpaper renders are of the namesake, though I use the same model and appearance for both, presently. Her creator serves as my one most significant source of input, suggestions and tweaks to Beyond the Tree, so I thought having the character making the occasional show would amuse me. (Especially since the Tavern-like environment is a fairly standardized port of call in this type of setting)

Her particular way of speaking is very much an accent thing though, yes.

just an fast thought i see that Te’len has her dagger on her no problem, but what i can´t get is why Hani has her broadsword on her at the dinner table i men that as bulky as it can get.

      June 11, 2009 at 09:45

The simple answer is “because she chose to”. There actually have been cases throughout the journey so far where she’s put the sword aside. It’s never strayed far from her, but she doesn’t always carry it directly.

She didn’t put it down this time. That alone says a great deal about her present state of mind and how she feels about her current surroundings.

hani doesnt seem like the person that’ll leave her sword other places then in its sheats, in her hands or under her pillow XD

My guess, this mage is going to provide some acting pretty much soon. Otherwise he’ll “gone in three flashes” for sure. :)
