#123 – “Sleepover”

Right, uploading this from a connection both annoyingly slow and absurdly unstable after thunder struck out against the local ISP. Hopefully it’ll still come through fine enough.

Pages like this are where I really do like having multiple night elven protagonists – even Te’len has to watch her head with the doorframes, nevermind Hani who regularely towers above her. It’s a contrast I find amusing – more so now when we have Areen about, seeing how she is only about knee height for her new friends. Of course, another interesting contrast with three night elven protagonists is that they all come from different places in the society, and how that affects how they react to situations, and to eachother.

    ‘former Sentinal’

The good part of me wants to take that to mean ‘The sentinels are used to hardships, making use iof what resources they have in as varied amount of uses as possible’

However, the evil part of me wants to take it to mean ‘Group of militant all females’ And the implications therein.

BUT! I’m a good person! Mostly… I adore the angles early in this comic, Nhani, the size comparisons ebtween the characters is a joy to look at :D

Heeh, it is rather fun to see that Te’len has to crouch a little to get through the doorway. Sure she isn’t that short for a Kaldorei woman from what I can tell, but her rather quiet background nature for a long part of the time make it easy to imagine her shorter then she really is.(Though she is rather quickly raking up the metaphorical height points.)

I do have to side on the side that says: sentinels make do with what they have… However I also suspect they left a reputation, deserved or not, amongst humans.. Afterall three/two (though it’s possibly Tiny was overlooked by the innkeeper) Night Elves that are given a single bed room. Either they had few rooms left, they wanted a cheap one of the owners thought the oh so commonly held belief of Night Elf females.

It’s really great to see the three ladies react to the situation. Particularly like Hani’s pose when she says ‘No why’, seems just right for that mildly puzzled ‘what could be wrong’ look.

And finally. I really like the lighting, Hani is clearly further away from the lightsource.. Though it seems a bit bright for a light in the evening, Eh… Probably a street lantern shining through the window.

Te’len is intended to be about average height for a night elven woman, which would make her around 6’8″ or 6’9″ tall. By comparisson, Hani towers at somewhere around 7’3″.

For the light, I actually moved the sources around a fair bit throughout the scene to make up for some angles ending up way too dark otherwise. I’m not entirely pleased with the lighting, and I still haven’t quite figured out why walls always seem to come out so much more brightly than the characters.

In my defense, I’m sure they have some form of light source hanging from the roof (which is actually the only light source casting the shadows in this scene)

To me, it seems like you may be making night elvs a little…too tall.

Going by an advantage height of man night elvs might reach 7ft tall. They almost look 9ft on this page.

Both Te’len and the innkeeper are actually on the same scale, so the height difference between them is no more than it would be in game. If anything, it’s the house itself that’s scaled down a little, but I thought it was a resonable size seeing human heights.

Ironically enough, Hani is actually too short – going by the numbers, she’s supposed to be some 8% or 10% taller than Te’len, compared to the mere 5% the model has. She already towers quite well however, so I felt drawing her out to full length would only mess up perspectives even further.

Let Hani take the floor :P

I think it can be awkward to share a bed, or even undress in front of others, for some people but it always seems a strange assumption; that because a person might be attracted to your gender, whatever sex they are, it should follow that they may have a sexual interest in you. It’s fairly common between men and women, but it hints at a little vanity and maybe some insecurity. It’s also admittedly far easier to be physically close with friends, men or women, who you know well and trust.

I think these are all factors at play here and it’s a very nice piece of characterisation. It’s also worth a thought that it was common for people to share beds a century ago, unless you were wealthy; although I think it’s fair to speculate about the innkeeper’s assumptions anyhow.

I like the affect of Hani taking her hair down there. Its almost not noticeble. Although I am trying to figure out exactly what Tiny is doing in panel 3. She is transfering from Hani to Te, just not sure how. And this is just a question in general, but from open mouth shots, do Night Elves have fangs?

They do, actually – though it’s only shown on the male models, as fairly large yellow ones at that. The female models lack any kind of shown teeth or mouth cavity (like most female models) so you can’t see them there.

With the overhauled models I use for Beyond the Tree, they’ve gained mouth cavities and, in fact, teeth. So I made sure to add visible fangs too, though they’re not all that large.

Not as far as i know Aries, and Hani lets Tiny walk of her arm to Te’len in panel 3.
I do hope the next page shows how they all 3 lay in bed in a top-down view(with the sheaths over them ofc), just curious if Te’len will be able to sleep ;) must be really awkard for her, since she’s so shy.

I am more worried that Tiny might get rolled over in someone’s sleep xD That must be a ever ending dangerzone for her.

I have to say I liked Hani’s reaction to the sleeping arrangements – no discomfort, not even the thought that Te’len would be uncomfortable – it seems dead on for someone that is former military, where you generally sleep in a big room with several dozen members of your gender, and generally sleep with enough clothes on so you can be action ready in seconds in an emergency.
