#125 – “Who Said Anything About Morning Elves?”

This page I wasn’t sure if I wanted to add at first – I wasn’t really sure what kind of exchant to make between them and with how overall.. well.. heavy chapter four has been, I’m a tad wary of reaching a point where character development seems all but shoved down the throat of the audience. Of course, when I first cut it out it really felt like there was an important beat that was suddenly skipped between #124 and what’ll now be #126. Then along came this particular idea and suddenly the problem solved itself.

On a point of random trivia, one of the biggest obstacles I found when making this particular page was the title – it took a whole lot of thinking before I finally came up with a page title for it that I was happy with.

Lovely page, as usual. Keep up the good work. Rei does look like a sort of doll in pane 5 and 6, hanging there, motionless =P Great ‘particular idea’, page 126 could wait for it.

    Very nice work Nhani,..

Thats a new one, Rei quiet, peacefull and sleeping.
I`m sure Rei will wake up as soon as she seen something she can fight/argue about :P
But don`t Rei and Te’len change for the night when they go to sleep ?

Te’len removed her skirt while asleep – she’s up already here, so she’s put it on again. Tiny, on the other hand, hasn’t changed so far. Generally being too small for covers, I think she’d prefer the added warmth.

Of course, being a fictional character, she (and the whole cast, really) can conveniently avoid the inconveniences unless there’s a point in mentioning them.

erm, in pane?? 6 when Te picks up Rei, shouldn’t her hair ((reis)) hang down abit, I mean, her head is tilted backwards and her hair should hang down towards the floor…otherwise nice page :)

If Rei ever saw you made this page, she would strait out murder you for makeing her look so CUTEIE <3 ^^. Love it, also just seeing Rei get lifted so lightly, i mean whenever she speaks there is such a force behind her, and yet, she is rather light :)

Love it, keep it up ^^

great work and tiny looks to cute there.
and theres an canon turned to lore.
one question did you use the ragdoll engine or did you manual placed the rigs and all that..

I actually don’t know if 3ds even has any kind of ragdoll engine built in, though I suspect if it does, it suffers from the same inherent issues that hair and cloth simulation does – which’d mean I wouldn’t use it for the same reasons I don’t use them.

Things like that simply have too much setup time, too long calculation time and can’t just be taken from one frame straight to another but have to be phased in step by step. Nevermind that ragdoll physics is generally called “ragdoll” for a reason – it can often look amusing, but I can’t recall a single instance of it looking.. well.. authentic.

I manually pose everything, including Te’lens’ skirt. Ironically, it’s the simplest method I’ve found.

Wow,Te’len got beatiful legs as you can see at pane 3 O.o

In my own personal notes I generally have four cast tiers – the duo itself, followed by the people who regularely travel with them, followed by reoccuring and important and/or noteworthy people, followed by extras and cameos. The cast page, on the other hand, only lists two categories, and so far has the duo under main, and then supporting as the second and third tier merged. I’ve actually been considering changing that so main contains the first and second tier, and supporting is the third tier on its own.

It’ll make a little more sense like that, I think, since the “travelling cast” are definitely a whole lot more regular than the rest of the supporting cast. It’s a matter of getting around to update the cast page yet again, however.

Panel 4 to 6 are the most exquisite and tender
works of art so far in this storyline.

    You are brilliant.
#125 and #124 were by far the best 2 issues in a long time,
not saying that the others were below average, but you rather
went over the top this time.

As I think you hinted in the original comment,
after such a heavy story lately, we needed some calmness. Brilliant.

Actaully, I must claim that panel 7,
and the truly marvellous position of Rei
in panel 8, also add up to exquisite level of detail.

The one thing I see about this page is Rei’s hair when shes being picked up, her hair shouldn’t still be plastered to her back :P Her head also seems much more ridged.

Maybe if she was being held with a finger supporting her head it make more sense ;P

Technically, seeing how Tiny actually has quite long hair, the end parts are pretty much held in place by the fingers around her back, so atleast all of it wouldn’t fall straight down. Of course, as Weertangel points out it’s very much a techncial limitation as well – Tinys’ hair model is just straight connected to her skeleton, it has no added flexibility or option for motion rather than attaching to her head, neck, shoulder and spine bones.

Of course, I think even if it did attach to other things (like pony tail bones, like Hanis’ ponytail is), I’m not sure if I could let it hang straight down without it looking horrendously fake – to the point where this alternative actually would look more authentic.

As for her head, there was a limit how far I wanted it to fall backwards since you can only turn the neck so far, and I was wary of making her head at an unnatural or dead-looking angle. Since the skeleton itself doesn’t make that kind of limit, I have to run with my own judgement.

Great page! Rei really looks cute! and to all the ppl who go on about the hair thingy, i think even the wow engine has its limits.

Also, are u guys wondering what’s she’s dreaming about?
    theories plz! :)

    Love this page!

I’d been hoping for a more ‘private’ interaction between these two and you totally delivered Nhan :D I can’t help but love Te’len more and more.

You know, I actually haven’t been paying attention to the time of day this comic usually takes place in until now. I mention this because I was also just reminded of NE’s nocturnal nature. I’d think Tee’s sleepiness would be more standard in the morning for your average NE. <,<

Of course, Hani's a trained soldier so I figure she kick into action any time of day. Te… well she's already having trouble with sleep.

I do really like the perspective of the left panel, second from the bottom where Te is picking up Tee. The point of view helps illustrate the world more through Tee's eyes.

I still keep trying to picture how tall she'd be at 100% height…

Woot! Rei is sleeptalking! Love it! xD

I love the ‘mmm’ in the end. Such a heavy sleeper <3

Now I know what was bothering me about frame 6… her arms may dangle due to gravity, but her hair does not.

Loving the comic so far! Keep up the good work.

It’s actually shocking how hard it is to animate hair, almost completely regardless of the medium. Seriously, if you draw, try to draw Rei’s hair in pane 6 and see how you do.
