#127 – “Crowd Control”

This is one of those pages that simply came out of asking myself (and the people I continously bug for input) “okay, what can I do about this that is interesting to see?”. We’ve seen the group in a crowd before – albeit not with Areen along – but we know that neither Hani nor Te’len are all that comfortable among that amounts of people, so I kept thinking about what else I could do with it. Eventually I just got the idea of “Y’know, what if Hani has an outburst right there?” and it pretty much came out of that.

The one thing that took by far the longest time with this page was the actual outburst – the pose, the camera angle.. I went through something like three different basic ideas (with several minor tweaks back and forth for each) before I ended up at the result here. I found it just really being a difficult shot, trying to leverage expression and intensity.

There’s a few dotted about randomly in the crowd – I’ve been largely reusing the models and textures I exported for the crowd scenes over by the docks, and haven’t really taken the time to invent more random appearances to dot around just for the sake of.

You can chalk it down to author complacency; for me it wasn’t half as important what the crowd consisted of so long as it looked sufficiently thick. If I’d taken more time for it I’d probably littered in dwarven women really as they are awesome, but with the limited time I just went for the straight visuals and didn’t even really think about what the crowd contained until in hindsight.

I have ALWAYS hated how in WoW the major cities aren’t full of inhabitants (other from that poor ol’ Topper McNabb in Stormwind), where as this comic captures it pretty nicely, as in the same way I see it.

But yeah, another nice comic Nhani, can’t wait until Capt. Cravenrest comes up to say his opinion about Hani & co – again ;)

did the guy in blue do anything in perticular?
Well since he’s the closest to Hani and the only one who really got pushed down.
    Lovely page as always btw.

How come Hani has such a fear for crowds anyway? or is it just a night elf thingy?
Anyway, great page again! just hope she does’t go beserk now :( last thing we need is a mad night elf doing a Bladestorm to clear some room…(would look cool though) or a shoutstorm in this case.

She comes from a people who spend most their time quiet and spread out. You would likely get the same reaction out of a human who spent most their life living in the wilds. Its loud, its close, it probably stinks, when they are used to quiet forest sounds, nothing closer than the press of the trees, and the smells of the earth.

Basically if you aren’t used to them, crowds are scary, lol.

Well,.. if Hani says (or shouts,..) “Back off !”,.. you better do it and fast.
but i guess everyone there already got the memo on that :P

    very nicely done,..
    another supurpe page,..

I see two pairs of twins in the crowd, and a quadruplet group >:O

Ponytailed Dwarves in red, Black overalls with white undershirt humans, and four humans with blue overalls and blonde hair, must be a fertile city!

Anyway, great comic, I’ve only come along it recently

I can see four dwarves with the same animations ;) It must be pretty hard work to make a crowd.

Maybe you should think about going through the city very early and put less people there? That would justify it and give you less work.

    Great title ;)

It’s not so much that it’s hard as it is time consuming – characters need to have a working outfit and then be exported, imported into a scene, have the textures assigned and then placed out in the scene at random intervals. Making a whole crowd of unique individuals would be hours of work for mere extras you barely even notice, so I just go with a few. I tend to try to scatter them out a bit so it’s less obvious how few individuals it actually is, but I think I got a little too lazy this time around.

Crowd shots are pretty rare so far, so I don’t have a reliable array of extras to use. I’ve long been thinking of making a set of very simple poseable models that I can use as extras when needed, but I’ve simply never had/taken the time for it. (Plus, that’d make crowds take quite a bit longer still, but would make talking extras more expressive)

In the panel where Hani is yelling, the way her hand is. It kind of looks like she is going to swing Rei like a weapon.

    “Excuse me, pardon me, um…Fezzik?”
    “EVERYBODY, MOOOOVE!!!”
    “Thank you.”

would have been funny if there was a dwarf walking by Hani, and when she yells he just takes a look up and replies: Bugger off, hippie.

Believe it or not, that works really well in reality, making this particular comic page very true to life…

ah this reminds me of an epic moment in Guaken Alice when the school is having a festival, and Natsume entrance mikans RPG event and he steers, silence at the crowd and they move like 10 feet away in less then 1 second.
one of the few episodes i saw and i needed an bit of help from my sister that could point out all the name and that.

Hmmm,It’s kinda stupid but I know it needs alot to work to fix it,in the crowd as you can see at pane 6,some people look exactly the same and most of them are near each other to those who looks exactly like them, can you fix that NHani?

      July 21, 2009 at 20:43

I’m not likely to go back and fix it in retrospect, especially not with the overall ‘rush’ already over. With #128 I probably will, but this page will probably remain as-is until it starts bothering me too much, and for now it really hasn’t. In fact, the shadows actually bother me more than the duplicates in the crowd.

If you wish to fix it, copy past a sign “Twin convention thattaway” into the pane, hee hee!
