#147 – “Gryan the Stout”

This page took a lot longer than I’d originally intended – I had the whole pane design and everything set, so I thought it’d just be a quick series of renders. That opinon started changing after having spent an hour trying to find Gryan’s baked texture and failing, falling back to assembling the closest I could with what I did find. Add over two hours of having to do network admin work for the local apartment building network and the time just flew away. Still, done at last. huzzah.

I did however manage to find time yesterday to update the cast page partially – Areen has been added, Te’len has been bumped up to main character status, and our now four characters strong main cast boast new pictures on said page. I’ll get to the supporting cast eventually; for now however, it’s a start.

Agreed; Areen’s face in the last panel is, in a word, awesome. She looks pretty bummed about the prospect that her miners-in-waiting are beyond hope…no pun intended (*eyes Hani warily*).

    Hey Nhani.
I’ve been a reader of Beyond the Tree since I catched up completely with the most recent pages when that was about page 80, and loved it ever since. This evening, it suddenly came to mind to refer to the comic on the forums of the Kaldorei RP community of Argent Dawn EU, bringing life and RP to Northern Kalimdor: “The Kalimdor Project”. I made a topic on its forums and placed a link in it to Beyind the Tree. I hope more people will read it and keep reading it, which is bound to happen as we all love the Kaldorei lore and RP! If I may, this is the website: http://www.thekalimdorproject.eu/forums/.
Greetings from Nisathil Waterleaf of The Mystral Blades, aka Dor Anahil Manaar. – Argent Dawn EU. ;)

My apologies for the double post, but I just remembered a non-member can only see a few of the forums. I posted in the Offtopic Discussions, which might not be accessible for you, but don’t worry, it is for all members and they will come take a look! I hope you’ll get more unique viewers out of this, something Beyond the Tree definitely deserves.

I do hope they find it interesting – though they might not exactly be paragons of night elven society and sensibilities, I’d like to think all three night elves in the main cast all come from different parts of their society, and carry that much with them. (Though arguably, Tiny mostly just carries rebellion against it)

Best of luck with your project, too. Hopefully you’ll fare better than most such attempts on ‘ol Earthen Ring, which tend to either fade away or first degenerate into “Let’s bring Stormwind to Darnassus!” and then fade away, heh.

Thank you, but I’m happy to say it’s already a success for quite some time, as in months upon months. Astranaar is mostly the main RP hub, but we’re often outside the town as well, or even in very other places than Kaldorei territory.
There are weekly events, and there are several guilds (For example, “Silverleaf Sentinels”, its leader is the ‘creator’ of the Project, the guild itself is a wing of Sentinels with it’s main base at Maestra’s. Then there are also “Dor Anahil Manaar”, “Druids of the Forest”, and often some people from “Disciples of the Naaru” are around as well. Next to that, several more guilds).
It’s a thriving, well-faring RP community, with more than decent quality of RP, and very… well, Kaldorei-ish, like it’s supposed to be. I can honestly say that I lost my heart for the Kaldorei RP completely there when I discovered it back in July, and the community is the nicest and possibly most intelligent I ever knew of in WoW.

…Anyway, I’ll take no more space of the page and make place for others to talk about the actual page. :>

P.S.: I had reactions in BtT’s topic. You have several addicted readers in the community already and got at least one addicted to it!

Their faces in panel 5 and 9 really displays the difference in their personality.

    In Panel 5:
Areen thinks “Watch your tone, boy. I’m not impressed”
Hani evaluates the potential threat he poses to the group
and Te’len is completely taken back by the sudden outburst

    In panel 9:
    Areen sadly thinks “but…but…I…”
Hani seems to think “suspected as much”
and Te’len is unsure of how you should react to a situation like this.

You’re a master at bringing forth the differences in their personalities. :3

great page as usual! but got a question, is’t gyran in Northerend now leading the westfall brigade?(still wondering where they got the ppl for it, recruiting ex-defias?)or did they leave him in 2 places? i know it does’t concern the comic, but i’m just curious.

for the rest, keep it going! and love Areens face!

Blizzard is messing up the character positions abit – just look at Garrosh Hellscream – first off he’s in Garadar, sulking over the desperate situation the Mag’har is in – secondly he’s in Warsong Hold, leading his own clan in the battle against the Scourged Nerubians – and thirdly he’s at the Argent Tournament, watching the champions of the Horde and Alliance joust against each other. Same can be said about Thrall, King Varian Wrynn, Jaina Proudmoore etc. The list can be made long.

In the end it’s all about following the lore process and know where they are and what they’re doing at the very moment – in this case, following the in-game lore would mean there wouldn’t be any Defias Brotherhood to deal with, but instead Westfall would’ve returned to the peaceful farmland it once was – what Nhani’s doing is displaying a part of the past lore and how things could’ve evolved into what they are now – so most likely, if we look at where we are at the date, our friends would either relax and deal with minor business back at their homes or, although not likely, fight against the Scourge, Vrykuls or whatever monstrosities they’d encounter up in Northrend – but I don’t think Nhani would take the storyline that far.

I hope that was enough of an answer ;)

Beyond the Tree is pretty early on in the game narrative, yes – Defias haven’t been dealt with, Outland is still closed off, Varian Wrynn is likely starting his gladiator career, Garrosh is still sulking in Nagrand and Tirion Fordring is still enjoying his Carrion Worm grub.

The group in Northrend is an interesting prospect in that they would be very different people now – there’s a literal mountain of challenges between where they are in the comic and where the game narrative presently is, and it’s fair to surmise that most of the group would’ve fully bloomed into their potential by then. And as fun as it might be to picture the group crashing full speed into the depths of Ulduar in a salvaged steam tank, it’d somewhat bypass the character development that needs to happen beforehand.

Beyond the Tree would be a very different comic if it’d happened in game present, as opposed to as early as it does, heh.

I imagine if you did do a jump to the future everyone would just have an eye-patch. Maybe(maybe) they would get different armor, but the eye-patch would be enough to know: they’ve seen some shit.

        October 6, 2009 at 16:46

Well if they were in Northrend, they’d probably wear something more adapted to the temperatures there ;)

What I do know is that beyond significant amounts of character development and character arcs having taken place between now and then, we’d have our fifth character (courtesy of Arc Two) around as well as Hani having a new sword. Plus several other details.

        October 7, 2009 at 18:15

Yes yes… the mysterious fifth character.

      • 21 Ragefury
        October 8, 2009 at 02:42

The fifth character would most likely be a Death Knight – but who knows, eh?

It’s hard to picture the outfits of which the group would wear. Hani, Tiny and probably even Te’len would wear fur, but Areen is another question. Maybe she would wear the basic Northrend plate armor with spiked shoulders, but it would look a little out of place for a paladin. Perhaps the Argent Crusade will have some custom made armor for her?

And speaking about Hani’s sword – not to make it all that fuzzy she could get a basic sword like the one she already has, say something similar with the Dalaran Greatsword. Or maybe you’ll go crazy and give her some huge shiny sword that looks like it could cut through steel? Only time will tell, I guess.

Hmmm I think Gryan has a rather bent nose – can’t be due to his facial expression, can it? Tbh it looks rather out of place, like someone gave him a good punch =/

I do, however, like the way the group express themselves toward Gryan’s sudden outburst. And the “poke him on the shoulder to get his attention” is getting kind of common as of these last 2 pages. Well of a way to display Hani and Te’len as “tourists” in the human world, but we can’t forget we still have Areen guiding them through. Maybe have her handle such business in the future? Just a tip ;)

    • 23 Nhani
      October 6, 2009 at 09:25

I think it’s part something with the human male body, enhanced by the fact that the vertex connected to the brow is also kind of connected to the nose. There’s no way around that unless I’d spend like another hour on each human male major pose I use just to add polygons to their face.

On Areen though, here’s a question: how much guidance has actually been asked of her? How much have they actually been seeking her counsel?

There’s several reasons why it plays out as it does, both to quickly establish Gryan as a character as well as get each character to, well, act. Areen most likely would’ve waited, as would Te’len. Hani or Tiny? Not so much. There’s also the fact that as it was scripted, Gryan doesn’t even notice Areen is there until the sixth pane.
