#152 – “Merry Morning Mood”

Hey look, dialogue! Amazing, I can hardly believe it. Will wonders never cease, etcetera etcetera.

The last pane of this page was originally meant to look much differently – I wanted it to be a shot from the back, seeing the duo waiting placed between Te’len and Areen wandering towards them. It looked good in my head, but subsequently failed to do so when I tried to render it – Tiny became too small, the height difference between Areen and Te’len became too much a problem, and it all just failed. So I ended up picking a shot that I felt looked much better. And yes, Tiny’s actually sitting on Hani’s backpack rather than her shoulder in that pane.

nice one. i agree that the last panel looks good.

wondering one thing tho. if tiny keeps riding on hani’s shoulder, how does she keep in shape?

Probably from talking so much. And I’m sure that there’s times where even Tiny goes around and does things – I mean, the time with the murlocs back in Darkshore, she was outside and got surrounded by them. It would explain how that happened if she slept in. Wouldn’t surprise me if Tiny was doing sprints across the “out” to keep in shape before Hani woke up from her dreams again.

Or perhaps a kitty came and Tiny decided to ride it around the place? XD

eh must be one of those classic seen that is in every video game/film/anime/manga extra.
and this one was epic or at least superior.

This had me giggling for a minute or so! Thank you – needed after last night (I won’t go there)!

And Nhani – this just keeps looking better and better. I know you said that you’re not much for working animation, but if you ever decide to put something together, send it on to Blizzard. Who knows? (Not only that but it would just freakin’ rock!)

The thing with animation is that it’s problematic; it isn’t hard to do per se – I have all the tools I need present and it’s all a matter of setting out some key frames, adjusting the animation between those frames and render to video sequence rather than stills.

What actually is difficult is coming up with the choreography and then making the animations actually look good – putting a sense of force, weight and personality into animation is something people can put years into learning, and I simply haven’t taken the time to get a good sense for it.

I’ve actually wanted to go back and give animation another try and see if I can make a better job at it than last time, but I’ve been lacking both the time and the idea to.

    i’ve bin wondering..

hani took out black fathom depth alone in a werry whort time, showing how bad iss she was.

now she has a tank (lightspark)and a healer (te’len) with her to do deadmines?

i know the story doesn’t follow the wow gameplay, but was just wondering if you had thought about it? =D

Kind-of took it out alone. She did get a bit of a knockout in the process – a wipe if not for Tiny, I’m assuming – and Deadmines is about the same level as BFD further in. And as explained earlier, this isn’t exactly following in the footsteps of the game – like with the mechanical construct earlier, which they really struggled with – so the simple solution really is to forget the comparisons to the game. And like bandages – they’ve been applied to Hani differently to this comic than in the game (and they’re persistent on her body rather than fading away after any period of time).

Nhani’s showing the game in a more realistic view, and I’m sure she’ll do the same when it comes to the Deadmines too. And at least this time, if Hani gets a concussion, Te’len can mend her back up and Areen can beat the pudding out of those that did it to her.

Indeed, just remember that if a boss or a mob is a certain level in-game it doesn’t mean that said mob will be more powerful then a lower level one, or because in-game it has lower health.

Look as an example I’ll take the sabers from Teldrassil and the sabers from Zul’drak. Tehnically both types are ferocious and could kill an unexperienced traveler, but do you really imagine a few of those Zul’drak cats killing pit lords from Outlands because they are greater level? Or a stag killing a lieutanent of the Elemental Lords?

If we took it by how hard Blackfanthom was, we know the following: it was in night elven lands, and they knew a little about it, some cultists are night elves, inside the light wasn’t that good (leaving the night elves in an advantage) and they weren’t really expecting an attack from an experienced fighter like Nhani.

If we looka t Deadmines, the Defias are ready for attacks, that’s why they were getting prepared in first place, to attack Stormwind and they knew something will happen in retaliation.

The progress also depends on how the story evolved, Hani couldn’t have gone to the Deadmines if she wasn’t banished from her home because of what she did, on the other hand Blackfathom Depths is right in the middle of night elvic lands.

To be honest, I started contemplating how to tackle the Deadmines before the group even arrived in Stormwind; I’ve spent months off and on trying to work out what the key moments are, who gets what time in the spotlight and what effects it all will have.

I don’t have a complete script of it – some things simply have to come of their own when I get there – but I have rough layouts, dialogue snippets, mental images and everything pushed together in a grand heap.

All that remains is letting it all play out and hoping it’ll come across largely as I intended it.

Moonbrook, prepare yourselves! Poor pillagers and looters, they might even meet the messenger. Those Defias surely always cheered me up with their cheery ‘you will die’ texts, sadly for them, they could never prove their right… Wonder how Hani is going to react to this kind of foes.

    Keep up the good work!

I must say, I love the last panel, I think it’s one of my favorite framings of the Hani+Tiny unit so far.

I’m not sure what Tiny’s doing with her right hand, though. If the back of her hand is facing the camera, as it appears, that is an extremly odd angle for a wrist to be at.

      November 2, 2009 at 15:05

I actually didn’t think of it at the time, but trying to mimic what she’s doing on my own.. I agree, that’s not a very comfortable way to hold your wrist.

As for what she’s doing, she’s actually pointing using her thumb, which is just thankfully just barely visible as it’s also a deformed mess.

    November 2, 2009 at 17:26

still deformed mess the hand i see you still haven’t completely solved it? can it be solved?
wait that diden´t work let my try again another time.
any way now i know where i remeberd the seen or one place where i seen an simuler that i think can work for the next time.
any one playing final fantasy cries core can´t spell the name haven´t really played it my sister do.
anyway what i remember is an seen when zack (main caretaker) is having an chat whit cloud as they walk on the mountains apparently there chopper crashed into the mountains and they and an few other are walking toward there destination and zack is shouting the line “hey are you guys coming or what?” or something like that from zacks perspective and hes an lot in front of the other except for clouds that right next to him keeping up to zacks speed.
did as fast look at youtube and found something close to where i the memory was or ether it serves me wrong or this is an simuler clip from the mountain cos i know there several clip from up there.

in the weary beginning or something like that or was it like that you had though of at first?

    • 19 Nhani
      November 2, 2009 at 18:33

It can be solved – it’s largely a matter of understanding the hand structure and employing that knowledge to both the hand shape and the underlaying bones that move it. So far, the new hand structure I have for Hani seems a whole lot better, but it has some peculiar issues of its own I want to figure out. Tiny, of course, is using a much older model revision since I have to re-do all the morph targets when changing the model topology, hence she suffers more deformation issues.

As for what I’d intended, I still have the test render of that left.. let’s see.. here – I’d pretty much intended that kind of visual, but with Hani and Tiny more readable and both Te’len and Areen closer to the camera. Unfortunately, what I originally wanted wasn’t actually possible without changing the perspective I use. I figure this is one of those times when it would’ve been a good thing to know of various lens types.

    i see the point there.
Tiny is in deed small and an shot like that can actually never get good in anyway possibly whit out maybe as an poster/wallpaper or what it now is it.
simple cos tiny is so mush small for the rest of due/trio.
and you think an shot from in front Hani walking towards the camera and Tiny facing backwards towards towards Areen and Te’len, think it will work/might work?
bah now is moment one wish one had action figure or the Lego not stored in an box on the Loft.
((did one goggle translate for this text loft))
need to learn how to drawn sticky figure in paint it never works out for me.

    Nice page as always!

I have wondered for some time however… Is the light reflection and shadow contrast on Hani’s face supposed to be so different? I’ve noticed it in other pages and it doesn’t bother me at all really but it seems weird that the light would super-reflect off the top of her cheeks by her eyes in some angles. It doesn’t seem to happen to Nila or Tiny at all and in comparison it makes Hani’s face appear jagged. Like in frame 2 there is a big contrast to the light on the top of her cheeks and below. I hate being nit picky :x

    • 23 Nhani
      November 4, 2009 at 08:32

It’s not a difference in lighting – if you look at the first pane closely enough, Te’len has the same manner of highlight that Hani does, it’s just a little less prominent. I’m not sure what actually causes the effect – whether it’s simply due to her pale hue or her specular maps being too bright or what.

I know there’s some strange effect with the model topology right there too, but I haven’t quite figured out how to eliminate it just yet. It exists on pretty much every night elven female face I have.

Anyhow, I’ll see about giving the specular map a look and reduce the emphasis on the cheeks somewhat and see if that makes it less pronounced, but I actually don’t know if that’s what causes it.

hmm might be the eye that act as light source tricking the render to miss calculate.
that was what i got when i took an closer look at hanis face in the secound panel.
do an render whit there eye set to of or something and see if that change anything.
i think its posebly for the light render to calculate if the difrent thing in bunching is equal to zero in that case in RL it would act in an special way i just cant remember how.

    • 25 Nhani
      November 4, 2009 at 16:56

The eye isn’t acting as a light source, it only has a certain degree of self-illumination set. It doesn’t actually spread light anywhere, it only affects itself and only in the region set.

Basically, self-illumination doesn’t work like light at all, it just makes a surface (or part of a surface) pretend that it’s lit up brighter than it actually is – since there’s no actual “light” being emitted, it can’t affect anything but itself.

I just thought of an odd, yet quite intriguing idea – have Tiny to be Hani’s personal bag-digger. A good way to take advantage of Tiny’s size, if you ask me.

Also, we haven’t seen what Hani hides in her bag yet – maybe she got an apple… :O

      November 5, 2009 at 17:02

Heh…that would be cool to see as well.

      Hani: “Knife.”
Tiny: “Gotcha.” *dives in bag, slides throwing knife out the top* “Here!”
Hani: “Thanks.” *grabs knife, flings into goblin back*
Tiny (peeking out of bag): “Hmm…interesting change to the typical back stab. Your own invention?”
      Hani: “Whatever works.”

My head comes up with some weird moments sometimes…

      • November 5, 2009 at 17:18

Could actually picture myself that.. without the last part

      • 32 Ragefury
        November 7, 2009 at 14:01

I was thinking more like Tiny shuffling through the bag, then jump out with an apple in her hands.

Tiny: You never told me you had an apple in your bag!
        Hani: Hey, that’s my apple!

Then Tiny jumps off Hani’s shoulder and runs off with Hani chasing her, like a cat & mouse game. That would be another one of those hillarious moments you just go “o.O wtf?” on.

Are you suggesting that Tiny be turned into some form of “pseudo-Handy Haversack” elf? Of course, it would explain how the Handy Haversack actually works, but still….

Actually, give Tiny a matching bow and arrows. Since she’s a Rogue (I’m guessing) it could work: poison arrows shot by Tiny. *TWANG*”Wah, malaria!”*THUNKDIE*

Or, you know, for shooting enemies In Places That Go Ouch When Hit. It’s what I’d do…

Also, keep it up, Nhani. Have a free Buff of Convidence. /cast Hoody-Hoo Rank 9
