#167 – “What We Need is More Noise”

Okay, yes, I admit, I went totally overboard with the pyrotechnics. Visuals often need to be overstated to be effective, and in this case, a huge bright fireball is a whole lot more effective than some meager dust cloud. The effect is.. overplaying the result, somewhat, but we’ll sort out the differences in the coming pages. Still, what better way to welcome the new year than with a massive explosion?

The presence of explosives is a little.. fudgery. They were always intended to be there, but at first I figured the camera angles would hide them.. and then last page realized they wouldn’t and conveniently snuck them in while trying not to be too obvious about them suddenly materializing. It was also initially intended for there to be a whole lot more of them.

And this will be the last page for 2009. See you next year.

You can NEVER go overboard with explosions!

    Tiny makes a good demoman.

Explosives might still be in the Dead Mines, after all, they were mines once, and mining is done partly with explosives. Who knows, maybe some nut forgot a few in the mines? Stranger things have happened.

Sorting out the differences? Don’t you mean sorting out the body parts?

Anyway. Indeed, see you next year. Might be a bit early, but let me wish you a happy new year right now.

Great explosion although… won’t that end up collapsing the support structure in that part along with the tunnel leaving our heroines trapped in a dead end of a mine with no air, food or water? :(

Anyways, Happy New Year all and see you more cheerful the next one! :)

About time I said something here, and all I can say now is “WHOO! AWESOME!”

This page has totally made my day, some pre-emptive fireworks before the real fireworks in my neck of the woods. *grin*

I love how the events of this page play out, from the reactions of Chekov and his gunny-girl right down to the massive kaboom in the bottom panel. It’s classic comedy gold! And yes, we finally get to see Tiny’s class here, and she represents the Rogues with style. ((Still can’t get over the panel where she’s hefting the flintstones — doom in a bite sized package!))

Anyways, thank you so much for providing us something wonderfully and masterfully crafted for our enjoyment! May this next year bring you enough fortune to continue bringing us laughter and tears.

    Elune adore, Miss Nhani!

This is my opinion on pantel 2 where Tiny ‘dropping the bomb’.

YEH, BOOM BABY! Now THIS is the way to celibrate the beginning of 2010.

Erm. There is no way Tiny couldve escaped that explosion, that was a suicide. Unless in wow terms, explosive has cast time and tiny vanished just in time!… Makes little sense imo :P. Its like shooting rocket launcher from melee range.

Good to see Tee jump in the fray. I always figured being shrunk would be a good boon to stealth. It sometimes works like that in game, too. :)

    Less explosions, though.

Rei need only have made her way to a crevice deep enough for a blast shadow. My guess is she located one such before lighting the fuse. The problems of structural damage remain, and are serious enough.

You never know, depending on what was in that barrel, the pyrotechnics could make absolute sense =p

… Although stashing xtra-hi-explosive is unlikely in a mine.

Also, how come the deaflugs, or the one who had two guns go off near each ear, is the one that isn’t oblivious to the sound? =p

Mind you, I may be off on my physics here, but to me it struck me very much as the movie pyrotechnics sort of explosive – dangerous and potentially lethal, yes, but more effect than pure devastation. If you’d want to use it for mining you’d likely have to confine it a great deal so it can build proper pressure – here we’re in a pretty open part of the tunnels and it can fairly freely expand in all directions. Except for the roof, there’s not that much to compress a significant shockwave or create shrapnel.

Of course, no matter how right or wrong I might be in that analysis, ultimately the explosion happens at the force of plot. It’ll do what it needs to do, no more, no less – it’s really convenient that way.

As for why Chekov is the one noticing.. well, one answer is becuase he’s the only one of the two with any sort of identity. The more true answer is because it was much easier to make him look back than it was the woman with the rifle.

well if Tiny took cover in an deep enough hole in the floor she would/souls be okay…sort of.

Perhaps the explosion will be a reason to see some druid healing…in as much as even a successful ducking into cover still leaves Tiny awful close to the force of the explosion.

first, Happy new year all! had a nice celebration exept the fact that ppl blew up the mailboxes and door with fireworks at my appartment building, so that will be 3 months waiting till its fixed..(damn slow city employers)
2nd, i love the page, i just hope they can go on since explosions underground are never a good thing, not to mention the fact that Tiny might be a red smidge on a wall couse of it.

Can’t wait to see how it goes on!! :)
