#224 – “To the victor..”

This was an important page, I felt; and not only for dealing with one of the direct outcomes of the prior battle. I really wanted it to be about the characters; Hani Foonmall and Te’len Nila deal with problems in rather different ways, and that gives an interesting dynamic between them. I tend to hold that Hani and Te’len are the two main castmembers that have the most differences, so I tend to appreciate when I can have the two of them work off eachother.

Getting yelled at is something that you have to get used to as a healer. After all people in pain aren’t friendly and least of all happy. And Hani seems to give to the urging of Te’len, which I find a nice dynamic. She may try to act tough but that only goes so far.

Her shoulder will heal but her mind will take a longer time.

PS I made a character on Earthen Ring, so I could have a character on the same server as someone as epic as you Nhani. My world is Argent Dawn

I do love the stoic feel Hani has. She always had to rely on herself for a long time so it would be difficult to rely on someone else.

“Getting yelled at is something that you have to get used to as a healer.”

    Oh, yeah, that’s the truth.

    Hmmmm.
A bit stereotype, the lonely fighter and (usually) hard man that takes a dangerous wound and pretend there is nothing.
Even if it fits perfectly to the personality of Hani i am a bit dissapointed though i have no other idea for another way.
I’ll be patient and wait for the next one.

Such pages are forboding, a peek into the future to points where the character develops past errs and flaws that are still present at the time of this particular page. It might be cliche to have a warrior lone wolf. However, what I find strong here, is that BtT moves past and beyond mere stereotypes and presents us with characters that have ‘evolved’ into a certain frame of mind and need to ‘evolve’ further. As the story progresses, I’m quite sure we will learn more of why Hani so needs to keep her distance and I’m quite certain that we will see her end up in situations where she needs to change lest she breaks.

This page has Yerdiss’ seal of approval.

No doubt. Don’t get me wrong.
        I agree with you, completely.
The very main reason why i love this comic and the characters inside is that they aren’t the typical cliche stereotypes as often seen in others.
I am pretty sure that the coming pages brings more light and depth in Hanis behaviour.
It is that you just see one page and then you have to wait for the next.
And until then the current one stands just for itself.
And with this one i have to face a cliche (seems so) without the next one maybe changing it all.
(hmmmm, hope i am able to make you understand what i mean, english is not my mother tongue)

Actually, that makes sense. It is also one of the problems often seen in Web Comics. A story unfolds _very_ slowly, compared to say a printed comic. So yes, I see what you mean.

One of the interesting things with Beyond the Tree is seeing just how pages get interpreted; I pretty much design pages by deciding on one (sometimes more) core event, theme, moment or even line of dialogue, and then build up everything else of that page around that.

As a result, there’ll be times when people spot exactly what I intended, times when they don’t, and times when they spin things off in a direction I hadn’t at all intended or expected.

For me, Hani’s behavior in this page had nothing to do with set stereotypes or really any kind of ‘tough girl’ archetype; she’s just going through the motions of she deals with certain problems, and we’ve seen all these steps in the past. In fact, I’m hoping this might provide more context to some of her past reactions to imply why she reacted like that then.

I figure with the combined efforts of the pally and the drood this could be resolved fairly quickly. ;)

Don’t forget that we aren’t playing WoW, but are in a fantasy world based on it. A gunshot in can easily kill you and will not solved by resurrecting. Also a Healing Touch spell may not be so easy to cast and will probably not magically heal everything. :)

Great interaction with Hani and Te.

  8. September 9, 2010 at 07:31

Great interaction, very interesting; I wonder how one might approach removing the bullet, graphic-wise so I’ll be waitin’ and seein’ I suppose.

It’s always possible that the bullet, at such close range, would also have gone through. In which case, it may be more drawing out any pieces that were left behind (if any) then patching up.

ICly in the game this has always been a problem for the healers. Even myself, as a Paladin, I find this tends to be a problem. One method I’ve seen people do is using some tweezers of some kind to pull free the missile that was fired into the person. Sadly, this method leaves the door open for trollers going “lolololol u miss 1 i die now fail”. My personal method, though probably likely to get me shot myself, is using the Light to mend the wound but, while doing so, ‘pushing’ out the alien objects inside the wound, forcing them out semi-naturally.

But anyway…should be interesting to see Te’len at work. Always did see her as a Restoration druid. xD

One of these times Hani should just put her tough side on the shelf for awhile and actually appretiate that someone treat her wounds – or she should learn first aid.

Good page, and I hope they actually bring back VanCleef’s head to Stoutmantle – that should earn them a good reward – perhaps a new leather tunic for Hani? Her old one must be quite torn from that gunshot.

Leather tunic? Nah, she should have a mail hauberk off him. Not that that would have stopped the bullet either, but it would look pretty cool. Oh, and in frame three Tiny should have replied ” Not leaking like that you won’t!” – yeah, I know. English can bee confusing at times, lol

    • 20 Synchronizor
      September 9, 2010 at 20:27

Well, that statement does make grammatical sense as: “Not leaking like that you aren’t [going to live]!”

Besides that, it really isn’t that uncommon for people to speak with slightly incorrect grammar, and for the Night Elves, Common isn’t even their first language.

      • 21 Zednotzee
        September 10, 2010 at 09:07

She said I’ll which is a contraction of I will. So won’t as a contraction of will not would be correct. And whilst I take your point about common not being their first language, it would be fine to use this in a humerous sense. But this is not supposed to be a funny moment. I also realise that English is not Nhani’s first first language either, and most of the time she does very well. But I think it would be helpful to her if, when she get’s it a bit wrong, it is pointed out. That’s how people learn you know :)

In my defense, Tiny’s approach to grammar (or indeed anything) can generally be described as the Sledgehammer Method(tm).

It sounded right, so I ran with; you’ll find more often than not, that pretty much sums up how I handle language period. There’s a few bad habits in there on occasion that I try to purge over time, but it generally involves rewiring a rather subconscious process.

Hani’s not very good at expressing emotions… she needs to work on that.

I think she the kind of girl that can’t show off her Emotions case A: she have to make sure she stay stronge or B:she too scard to make one to show her weakness. if I talk about C and D I sure Hani will kock down my door and hack my head open >.> so I sticking with A

I’d say that she’s actually great at hiding them.

  13. September 10, 2010 at 19:42

This one shows the personalities of all four quite nicely. Lightspark, the tough-as-nails but heart-of-gold; Rei, the sarcastic and to-the-point; Hani, the battle-hardened and hard-hearted who begrudgingly gives in to what her body is poignantly stating to everyone else in the cavern; and Te’len, gentle, understanding, and just as tough when she needs to be.

Speaking of which, I still need to get you personalities of some individuals in a certain village we discussed. I’ll try to do that for you this weekend :-)

After reading it again and again i am more and more impressed by Te’len. She seems to know what to do and that he has the skill to do it, no doubt.
Look how she deals with Hanis temper. She seems a bit surprised at the beginning but not really impressed at all.
In a subtle way she has more strength than Hani. In Tao (the chinese philosophy) and Taiji she would present in a wonderful way the strength that is related to the element water, what fits again perfectly with healing.
It is a very fine combination, these two.

  17. September 26, 2011 at 02:55

‘Wrap up and pretend its fine’ reference to her still-bandaged arm perhaps?
