#245 – “Up to Speed”

No, I’m not going to go through the cliff notes of the entire comic; you get a fade out. It’ll get Areen up to speed with the rest of us.

So the more interesting question, where has Beyond the Tree been? Well, yeah. That’s a good question, isn’t it.. I actually don’t know what’s been wrong with me; what I do know is that I’ve not been able to get a proper night’s sleep for the entirety of 2011 so far, much to my standing frustration. It’s pretty much wrecked havoc on my ability to concentrate, so actually writing anything scriptlike was pretty much out – I’ve just not been able to focus on it.

Am I better now? I honestly don’t know. I’m still working on the sleeping thing; Beyond the Tree isn’t halted, but yeah. I just need to figure out whatever I managed to break with myself so I can get back on track. I’ll try to get back to it; guess we’ll see how well I succeed at that in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, sorry for basically vanishing on you.

    Don’t fret about the time between episodes. Take care of number one and remember this is not a job, it should be fun for you first of all.

    That said, I wonder if our little pally is going to hear the whole story and when they get to Stormwind, run like hell at the first chance.

    Its nice to see you back, but honestly, take a nap. Your life is more important then a webcomic. Sure its fun reading and you got tons of fan, but in the end you also a human being(Arent you o.0?) So Relax and tape your life together and then work on the comic

      I’ve been trying, believe me. It’s not that I don’t sleep, it’s just that it’s all over the place, generally being both fragmented and happening at.. well.. completely the wrong hours, basically. Actually getting a page done feels like a potential sign of recovery, at least, because it’s more focus than I’ve managed the last few weeks. Just hope the trend holds.

    Well, I was starting to worry that you had been carried off by a particularly aggressive pack of lemmings.
    I’ve been having crazy weird sleeping habits the last few weeks, too. Just this weekend, I stay up to 7AM Fri/Sat night (24 hours uptime), slept till 7PM, down again at 6AM, up at 2PM. I think it’s something to do with the time of the year, as we start getting more light . What abouts degree latitude are you at, Nhani?

    Rei: “Well, Trees got to talking, caves got explored, archdruids got punched, yadda yadda yadda we’re on a cart with a gnome.”

      The going theory is stress, actually, really – looking back at the point where my update schedule started getting a bit shifty (back in.. October, I think?), I think it’s quite possible to draw the conclusion that it began around when I started worrying I might lose the apartment I was in, and then continued after my moving as there were more and more things to keep in mind while I never really settled down in what’s never going to be more than a temporary home.

      As for Tiny.. as fun as it might be to explore just how she’d recount the entire story.. I think Te’len would likely correct her quite a few times over the course of it; Tiny isn’t exactly what I’d call a very reliable narrator.

        Nhani, get yourself better and don’t worry about your readers :-) We’ll miss the updates, but as our Raid Lead often says “Real Life Comes First”.

        P.S. You may find useful a book I’m currently reading (as I am “between contracts”). It’s by Dale Carnegie and called “How to Stop Worrying: and Start Living”. Some nice people stories in there, even if it has to be taken with a pinch of non-American salt. I’m only half-way through, but to summarise what I have learnt so far:
        * Write down what is the WORST that could happen (e.g. lose my home in my case)
        * Accept it
        * Write down three things that could make the situation more tolerable (e.g. move back in with Mum) or less likely to happen

        To help with the latter:
        * Identify the problem
        * Write down the FACTS
        * Analyse the facts
        * Write down three possible solutions
        * Decide on the best and
        * Do It

        Some things to remember:
        * Live for today, for the yesterdays have gone and the tomorrows not yet happened
        * Food left to go cold doesn’t taste as good, nor does revenge
        * Pour a pint of milk down the drain. Now remember there’s no point crying over spilt milk
        * When life gives you lemons, make lemonade
        * Look out of the window. What do you see? The mud on the ground or the stars in the sky?
        * Be yourself

        If any of these makes you go “whoah!” as you read them, then that’s probably the one that’s causing you sleepless nights…

    Stress is always coming back to bite you when you are trying to push it away. Take a step or two back Nhani, if at least until you got a solid base (read: home) to start from. Us readers can wait, your personal well-being is far more important than the comic. :)

    Yeah, I know about those sleeping problems and how hard they can be.
    I sleep at odd hours and sometimes have to push myself back into a pattern
    just to make sure I wake up at the right times.
    I’m hoping things will get better for you.

    I love reading one of my favourite WOW comics,
    keep it up !

    P.S.: As a side-note: It says chapter five and comic, should be chapter six. ;-)

    I am sorry to hear of your insomnia. I have suffered from it too and it sucks. If I may be so bold, you should see a doctor about it and see if they can recommend a sleep specialist.

    As a personal example, I went to a sleep clinic and was diagnosed with restless leg syndrome. My body was jerking at night keeping me from falling into REM sleep. I had no idea I had it.

    Nowadays, I am a lot better and can enjoy a good night’s sleep. Is my sleep perfect all the time? No. But, at least I am getting enough sleep that I can have a reasonable life.

    Welcome “back” Nhani. Good to hear your still with us.
    As many other before me said, sorry about your restlessness :S that does mess up ones days if it goes on for too long. Hmm… we lack a forum at times for these things :D.

    Nevertheless, i hope you take your time to work it out, truly appreciate you giving the heads up on your situation, even if there are some periods of time in-between :).
    As has been said before, your fans prefer you being healthy rather then seeing something rushed up. Take your time, get it sorted out, and we will still have BtT on our Fav-tap in the browser :)

    Hope you get better soon!

    ps. this is written at 05:18, becauss i tend to nap in the afternoon… :3 /soothe

    Hey Nhani,

    Sorry to hear about your problems with sleeping, i hope you`ll feel better again soon.
    Dont worry about regulair updates too much, your health is more important.

    stupid question maybe, but now that cataclysm is up and running, how do you get the old backgrounds for your comic??

      I actually made sure to take a last sweep the evening before the world-changing patch to make sure I had a good collection of backdrops for the purpose. So it’s basically just that I have a library of screenshots to make use of. With luck they’ll be able to cover most situations I need.

        January 21, 2011 at 00:32

        um just in case you run out of backdrops to use for any situation, you can go onto a wow private server and get the shots you need, (worst case only) they have not yet updated to cataclysm and i dont believe most will for some time.

          January 23, 2011 at 13:06

          Yeah, they won’t. It’ll take them a while before they manage to break the new safety stuff Blizzard implemented to Cata.
          It’s also likely that they won’t. Ever.

          So yeah, if you’d need any screenshots from pre-cata, you gotta use privs.
          Or contact someone who could do it for you.
          Like me ^^

          • January 24, 2011 at 15:44

            Thanks for the info Fokker,..

            I`m not sure if i like the idea of loggin on the a private server with the same machine i use to play the official game,…

            i very much apriciate the offer of you take the screenshots for me,..
            but i fear that at some point either those servers will upgrade too,..
            or you`ll get sick of my never ending requests

            could you send me an email or contact me over my own site? (just click my name)

              Nah, don’t worry, as I said, it’ll take them a while.

              And I don’t think I’m going to get sick of your requests so quickly ^^

              Anyway, I just sent you an E-mail, hope I got the right one.

        • January 24, 2011 at 15:47

          Thanks for the info Skiotha ,..
          i`ll look into something like that,..
          but i`m not sure about using private servers on the same machine i use the
          “normal” WoW.

    Luckily because of the way wow is programmed you are able to keep multiple version of wow at various patch levels (on a external drive is easiest) . While you cant physically log into the servers you are able to keep matching versions of Wow model viewer to extract the background models.
