#268 – “Silence Absent”

I was going to write something clever and interesting, but my mind seems to be struck on phrases about the deliciousness of very specific pears.

Hmm, to be a nag… and a lorewhore.
Would NE’s even know the word hoe and what it can mean as how Rei meant it?
I wouldn’t think they exist in their own NE culture. And as such it would be weird for them to know the word and it’s connotation…

Meh. Feel free to ignore this as this is not the place for a debate about lore. That’s what stuff like roleplayerslament is for.

Hoe the tool is probably fairly ubiquitous among all cultures.
Ho the classy lady, Rei probably is well aware of. IIRC, she’s spent quite some time in SW/EK in the past decade.

The argument could be made that no one should no what a ho is, as that particular synonym is a pretty recent addition to the English language. But it’s hard to make a pun out of prostitute.
… Does any one want to know why ‘hooker’ also would not work? Any one? Beuller?

“The argument could be made that no one should no what a ho is, as that particular synonym is a pretty recent addition to the English language.”

Then, on the other hand, this is the planet of Azeroth.

The connotation has been seen in print as early as 1845; it’s likely derived from the concentration of prostitutes around the shipyards and ferry terminal of the Corlear’s Hook area of Manhattan in the early to middle 19th century, who came to be referred to as “hookers”.

Yeah, I bet you expected somebody to cite the remarkably rough reputation of Maj. Gen. “Fighting” Joe Hooker.

          Interesting.

Similar but different, my understanding that it was derived from a I believe British General Hooker during the revolution, who was known for taking along fineries with his command, and a steady supply of lady friends.
http://www.encyclopediavirginia.org/Hooker_Joseph_1814-1879 Mentions the phrase being in use before Civil War Joseph Hooker. Although his great-grandfather, also a Joseph Hooker, commanded in the Revolutionary war as well, so perhaps we’re both half right.

But I believe we’re all missing the true question of the day: Hani leaves her gloves on to sleep? I could handle the hallucinations and the voices in her head and the cold willingness to take life, but that’s just… wrong.

Maybe she punches Fandral Staghelm in the face every night in her sleep. She’ll need gloves for that.

In the case of Hani and Te’len, I see your point – while I think they’re dimly aware of the existence of the profession, they’d probably not be aware of the slang, no. Though one could probably make a good argument out of Te’len reacting more to Tiny’s overall tone of voice and type of statement than its explicit meaning, knowing out of habit that when she throws a remark like that it’s usually some kind of insult or another.

With Tiny, though… if the average human knows, then she knows. It’s part of her whole rebellion thing.

So Duskwoodians (is that what they are called ?) sound a bit like the Germans from ‘ ‘Allo ‘allo ‘ then :-D

I was kind of thinking the hoe part before I read Rei’s response :-D

Not being a native speaker of English hoe ( or rather ho) as Rei takes it was the first thing I thought of.

And given the right fantasy back drop, there could be a call for ploughing of lilies, as well.

Having actually passed through the tutorial/prequel chapter but yet to advance much further, I’ve learned that the correct reply to someone shouting “Plough the Lillies!” a sword to the face, not “I don’t have time for your brute force floral arrangements” as I might have initially thought.

Ah the things one learns from games.
