#286 – “Deciding Factors”

This is one of those pages where a whole lot of things that could go wrong also did; starting with the script, the dialogue has been a significant annoyance, having gone through several revisions with several lines or even entire exchanges that didn’t quite feel right and I ended up tweaking over and over. Beyond that, my 3D environment had some spectacular failures with viewports ending up with significant visual corruption that I eventually managed to track to a video driver update that I’d done as part of a recent attempt at trying to get MechWarrior 3 to run on a modern system with a 64-bit Windows 7.

Getting those old games to run is a bit of a pain. I think XP was the last OS I had that ran older things without too much issue and… Well, it may as well be ancient now.

I can also see why the dialogue was a problem. Not least because it’s probably the most Hani has ever said in a single set of panels, no? I guess if there’s anything she’s going to pipe up about it’s advice on fighting.

In the case of MechWarrior 3, Windows XP actually doesn’t help much – its main problem is being made in the era of DirectX 6 where graphic cards and 3D accelerators being two completely separate cards was still a common notion and DirectDraw still existed. I finally got it working to a playable state in 640×480, but any higher than that makes the frame rate bury itself.

As for the dialogue, the biggest issue was really the large amount of factors that all had to combine together – it had to sound like something Hani would actually say and believe in, and make enough sense that it could be applicable on Te’len who prefers non-violence (and non-lethal) where possible and still also apply to Hani who is very pragmatic about violence and killing both. All while still leaving plenty of space for Hani to be every bit as flawed as she is.

I am sorry to hear of the system issues that plagued you this past week. There always seems to be unforeseen consequences to updates, doesn’t there?

You managed a fine comic this week. One that provokes thought.

I don’t have anything funny or insightful to say, so I’ll just take this moment to sigh wistfully and longingly pine for a Te’len of my own.

I feel the dialogue options you went with are sound. A well done page overall, Nhani.

Y’know, I was thinking a Hani v Te sparring render would make a nice voting incentive :)

I may have missed this somewhere else, but will you be factoring new Tyrande in straightaway or when/if we reach the present?
(Spoiler Link for the unawares: http://media.mmo-champion.com/images/news/2011/september/tyrande.jpg – this is her model update not just for the 4.3 dungeons she’s part of, but also for in Darnassus as well)

Well.. Nhani’s reaction in the latest Thoughts was along the lines of “I don’t like this, but whatever..”, plus I think the new model doesn’t hold a candle to Nhani’s version. So, I daresay we won’t see the new model here, like, ever.
