#292 – “The Bears, the Bears”

As much as I’d love to go “Hey look, it’s a few hours early!”… the fact that it’s more along the lines of several days late kind of throws a few furbolgs into that nutstore. Ahem. Anyway.

With this page I suddenly realized, much to my chagrin, that with Cataclysm not only am I limited to either archived screenshots or an old version of map viewer for backdrops but there’s also the problem that most of the surrounding NPCs are either relocated or dead, making it a bit of a bother to figure out who is supposed to be where and how exactly they looked again. Cheating with narrow angles work, but it isn’t exactly elegant, and makes the place look unfortunately empty. I’ll see if I can figure out some wider perspectives for the whole of Auberdine, even though I’ll probably have to rely a whole lot on random NPCs.

miss Nila is a druid right? So when is she going to turn into a bear? That would be awaome, thou I would miss her pinkish skin that way. And maybe a bit late but I’m starting to like Areen very much.

Well Telen is more on the Balance and Restoration side of the things, so I wouldn’t wait for her to take any shapeshift forms anytime soon.

  5. December 7, 2011 at 16:56

Well there is the fact that in WoW all the quest givers and vendors have to be in their spots so people can find them whenever they need them. This however is not WoW, it is Auberdine. If you wanted to slap a random patrol of huntresses in the middle of the road, or have the dwarf contingent grow by 20 bearded alcoholics, or vanish entirely, it is completely within your power. Especially since Cataclysm is here…and none of us can remember exactly who was were.

In short, do not worry to much about getting all the NPCs where they belong. Unless they are important to the story they are little more than random models anyway. So…go nuts.

Well Google gives you pretty easily pictures about the old World of Warcraft, but if you want to get some info about how the NPCs were located, I would advice you to try wowhead’s archive. There should be some useful material if you need it :)

We can’t stop here; this is bear country.

And Skyrim has taught me anything, bear country is definitely not a safe nor a good place to be! For through Skyrim have I discovered that Bears are in fact nigh-invulnerable demi-gods with metal instead of flesh, death instead of claws and ground-penetrating, stealth-detecting omniscient awareness – gifts given to them by their Mammoth God overlords.

If you see a bear, it is already too late to run ;|

I recall i had a battle with a frost-dragon in skyrim. I use Dragonrend and make it land a good walk away… i come over there to see it just die. As i run over, suddenly two bloody bears charge at me.

Skyrim bears dont need Thu’um… they just maul stuff…. T.T

Wowwiki and wowipedia *should* have pictures of the old NPC’s so you can get their looks. and I know wowviewer has an NPC tab, that *should* let you see their armor/faces” too once you know their names. as for where in the area… no clue. >>

    Hehehe bears…

      December 8, 2011 at 07:49

The names bit is really the problem – if you remember their names then you can usually locate images of them somewhere. If you don’t… well, good luck, pretty much. The closest I’ve found is that Wowwiki at least seems to have a Lists of NPCs in Darkshore that isn’t too long so all entries can be browsed through without it taking forever, but there’s simply no convenient list available that just shows NPCs that are or used to be in Auberdine, at least that I’ve been able to find.

You could always ask someone to make a list who is not afraid of running a “wrath” level private server, even if you don’t want to look it up yourself.

I’m sure one of us does… *looks around guiltily*

Auberdine Inn coming in from the dock:

Fiora Longears: standing to the right on the main dock if you’re coming from the finger dock from the boat to Stormwind – north side of the dock.

Cerellian Whiteclaw: South side of main dock just past the last gazebo, two light posts prior to the main inn.

3 sentinels guarding inn entrance – two flanking and one on north side of dock just before inn entrance.

Upstairs – Wizbang Cranktoggle – gnomish questgiver for buzzbox, gaffer jacks and electropellers.

    Downstairs:

    Innkeeper Shaussly behind counter
Laird – fish vendor immediately to right of ramp when you’re coming down
Kyndri – baker, across from Laird and more into the corner toward the ramp up to the flight master
Taldan – drink vendor, immediately to left of ramp when you’re coming down
Allyndra – food & drink vendor at northeastern corner

Up on the flight master’s dock:

Gwennyth Bly’Leggonde – priestess who has quests related to the washed ashore sea creatures
    Caylais Moonfeather – flight master
    Auberdine Sentinel at southeastern corner

I’ll give you the rest of the layout when I get home from work, but these should get you started :-)

I had some time before I had to leave, so here’s some more. I don’t have the eastern area yet, but here’s the northern area and the area immediately outside of the Inn – of course, you’ve already added Gubber, so I left him out.

      Outside Inn:

Jaelysia – stable master, standing outside the Inn’s eastern side across from the wanted poster for Murkdeep

Auberdine Sentinel on patrol along pathway
Auberdine Sentinel at southwestern corner of moonwell

Yalda – night elf spirit outside house up the hill to the east/southeast of the inn, standing at the southwestern corner looking out toward the lighthouse

Barithras Moonshade – quest giver for cave mushroom quest, standing at northeastern corner of the Inn next to the mailbox

Sentinel Clynda Nal’Shea – quest giver for mysterious red crystal quests and the one to whom you turn in the Murkdeep quest on completion, standing at opposite side of path from the northeastern corner of the Inn, just to the southeast of the footbridge leading across the channel.

      Across channel to the north:

Archaeologist Hollee – dwarfish quest giver for absent-minded prospector, standing to the southwest of the lodge building across from a campfire set up just east and slightly north of her – she carries a lighted lantern in her right hand

2 sentinels flanking entrance to lodge

      southeastern corner:

Dwarf caravan with two dwarf NPCs immediately south of it:

Gorbold Steelhand – trade supplies vendor and quest giver for Deep Ocean, Vast Sea
Elisa Steelhand – blacksmithing supplies vendor

To the east of the caravan is a forge setup along with a screened box for sifting panned sluce.

Thelgrum Stonehammer – dwarven mining supplies vendor standing to southwest of screened box.

Jenna Lemkenilli – gnomish engineering trainer standing just to the south of the forge.

Kurdram Stonehammer – dwarven mining trainer standing at east of forge itself.

Delfrum Flintbeard – dwarven blacksmithing trainer working at an anvil northwest of forge and northeast of caravan.

      Inside northern lodge:

Alanndarian Nightsong – quest giver for Easy Strider Living (cooking-related), standing to northeast of stone benches and font at intersection after coming in.

      Down left (west) passage:

Mavralyn – leather armor and leatherworking supplies vendor at northwestern corner.

Harlon Thornguard – armorer & shieldsmith at southwestern corner.

      Down right (east) passage:

Valdaron – tailoring supplies vendor standing along southern wall near eastern corner.

Grondal Moonbreeze – tailoring trainer standing at southeastern corner.

Shaldyn – clothier at northeastern corner.

      Down northern passage:

Naram Longclaw – weaponsmith at eastern side.

Dalmond – general goods merchant at western side, slightly south of Naram.

Thundris Windweaver – quest giver standing at northern edge, looking out over the water along shoreline.

Okay, here’s the remainder of Auberdine:

      Eastern Auberdine:

Sentinel patrolling between northern and eastern lodges across footbridge, patrols out to road and returns.

Gershala Nightwhisper – quest-giver in gazebo in center of Auberdine.

Tharnariun Treetender – quest-giver to left of lodge entrance.

Auberdine Sentinel to right of lodge entrance.

Terenthis – quest-giver in southeastern corner, across from ramp to second floor.

Sentinel Elissa Starbreeze – upstairs, looking out toward Inn.

Entrance to Auberdine from road flanked by two sentinels.

Sentinel near beach, directly south from Yalda’s house, patrols out to border of The Long Wash.

Let me know if you need anything else in Darkshore and I’ll get that for you. I can also give you the names and placements of anyone in Astranaar or anywhere else in Ashenvale. I have a separate installation on my other hard drive that I’ve set up as my own server (pre-Cata) for machinima creation, so if you need it, I can find it! :-)

Well this is handy… I think you just coughed up a larger list than some old ones I’ve seen supposedly listing NPCs from all of Darkshore.

Now if I could only put the entire map chunk into 3ds and place them directly, but alas. Still, it gives me a list of names to look at for the next page (and rough positions for considering whether they should be in frame or not!) so thank you, that helps.

Because nothing says “Welcome to Kalimdor!” like a circle of Druids of the Claw.

Areen is definitely not in Kansas anymore.

This page and the discussion remind me just how much I miss Auberdine and the old Darkshore. My first Wow toon was (and is) a night elf druid and I was sad to finish all the Darkshore quests and move on.

Well, the easy way is with some private server on Patch 3.x or prior.

Requires a new installation and possibly more than one swear at the instability of these things, also, the high chance of some stupid kiddies and/or GM’s who go on your nerves.
And a small chance of malicious Software, distributed through “needed” Addons or “special patches”.

The other one also involves a fresh installation of WoW, you could open the raw data (complete world incl. everything static, excluding everything non-static [forges, NPC, etc]) with the Mapviewer.

As for the needed WoW-Version, well, best would probably be to make a new installation from CD and making sure to stop updating once you hit Patch 3.x.
Sadly, Blizzard killed all and every of the older Patch downloads, at least, I can’t seem to find them.

I hope this helps, if you might want to know more/can’t understand something because of my sleep deprivation, feel free to send a mail my way.

I’ve actually been using mapviewer for backdrops since #290, which is why they’re of a bit lower quality than prior to that; I actually mention my using it in the commentary for this page ;)

Problem is, while the client does contain baked textures for most, if not all, NPCs, it does not, as far as I’m aware, contain any data on where they are spawned – NPC spawning and behavior is handled entirely by the server.

So, while I can actually prowl around the old world now for backdrops, albeit with fairly low draw ranges and really low quality skyboxes, it doesn’t actually show me anything about where NPCs used to be or what they looked like.

Like I said, excuse my sleep deprivation. :D

If you aren’t too comfortable with Map Viewer, you might want to take a look at the private servers, as long as you don’t download anything fishy from their site you should be good, the original WoW-Client doesn’t allow Datatransfers other than the needed ones to work and a running Firewall+Anti-Vir should take care off the rest.

The only problem I found on these servers are the lacking AI and pathing issues like, everywhere and the occasional annoying kiddie.
However, two of these problems aren’t of interest to you if you just want the NPC to stand there and get photographed and the other one, who the hell is in Auberdine anyways?

No need to worry too much about the npc’s, Nhani.
All you need is the bear necessities. :P

Quick search of “youtube auberdine pre-cata” came up with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfN_0McrBEk “Auberdine, Darkshore – Pre-Cataclysm”
… and yes it brought a tear to my eye too. I couldn’t bear to come back and do more than a few of the starter quests when Cata first came out.
