#291 – “Pier Pressure”

So, yeah. Where has Beyond the Tree been? The biggest and most notable thing is really my being unable to sleep properly for the last few, well, weeks, at least. It hasn’t exactly done wonders for my concentration, nor my urge to really do much of anything, so that’s really the outstanding problem. Of course, the release of both The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Saints Row the Third didn’t help my lack of desire to sit down and stare tiredly at 3D graphics for a few hours at all.

#290 – “INFILTRATE”

Just imagine the situation in Night elven taverns - every single human is pretty much guaranteed to count as underage there!

MISSION COMPLETE. PRESS SPACE.

Having spent the better part of the weekend reinstalling my secondary PC after combining it the components of another old PC that was about to be disposed of resulting in some kind of hideous frankenPC that I’ll have to take care to put down if it ever asks for a companion, I’ve made the pleasant discovery that by installing World of Warcraft up to burning crusade on it and never patching that copy, I can run the old Map Viewer. Which is great – except for that the Map Viewer never quite was all that amazing at visuals and it’ll always produce lower quality backdrops than WoW itself. Well drat. But oh well – it does let me prowl around the old world provided I don’t expect to show anything fancy in the background like say the sun, the moon or water.

The last part of that does mean this particular page is a right mess combining WoW and Map WMV backdrops in a zany mix. So I guess it’ll serve as a good test run.

#289 – “Going Overboard”

You know, Water effects is one of those things that’s still difficult for actual professional 3D artists, and I’m just a novice hobbyist. Yeah.. it could be better. Ahem.

The journey through Auberdine is something that I’ve planned and re-planned quite a few times – there’s a careful balance to strike between risking confrontations and letting the protagonists actually put a few thoughts into avoiding attention. It gets more complicated when there’s only a limited set of backdrops available that everything has to somehow be worked around, for better or worse. The last iteration actually only solidified this friday, so we’ll have to see if I can actually stick to that or I’ll have to alter it again to work around the backdrop problem.

#288 – “Such a Shore”

Alright, first thing off. Since Blizzard went and announced a new expansion this weekend and I expect it’s likely some people will prod me about what I think of it, I conveniently put a post together regarding my thoughts that’s available here. Easier to keep the discussion in one place.

With that out of the way… this page was one of those that ended up automatically troublesome due to one of the panes involved – since Hani and Tiny see Auberdine, I felt it was important that we too get to see it, rather than just take their word for it. Problem is… digging through my backdrop library, I found I was kind of lacking any good distant shots of Auberdine from the direction of the sea. And it’s one of those things I can’t go get a pickup for since Auberdine isn’t all that intact anymore. So the shot we get of it is a bit silly, doesn’t at all succeed at implying the actual distance they are from it and is kind of from an angle it can’t be from.

#287 – “And All is Possible”

Ever noticed how Areen carries around the insignia of the Lyran Commonwealth? I suppose the Lyran Wall of Text is just a variant of the Lyran Wall of Steel.

I question the brilliance of anyone who keeps a Warhammer in a knife fight with an Atlas. Sure, you can disengage the PPC inhibitors, but with barely more than half the armour and up against an AC/20, you really should be out to medium range at least. Now of course there’s the LRM to contend with at that range, but I’d rather take that scattered damage than dance up close with a gun that can trash all my armour in any single location but CT with just one hit.

#286 – “Deciding Factors”

This is one of those pages where a whole lot of things that could go wrong also did; starting with the script, the dialogue has been a significant annoyance, having gone through several revisions with several lines or even entire exchanges that didn’t quite feel right and I ended up tweaking over and over. Beyond that, my 3D environment had some spectacular failures with viewports ending up with significant visual corruption that I eventually managed to track to a video driver update that I’d done as part of a recent attempt at trying to get MechWarrior 3 to run on a modern system with a 64-bit Windows 7.

#285 – “Morning Activities”

Today is a… day. Yes.

This is a page I’ve had in mind for awhile but first wasn’t sure where to put and then wasn’t sure quite how to design. There’s been all kinds of things like how much setup do I need, how much of the page do I dedicate to the actual sparring, do I need the following dialogue in the same page or can I skip it for the next one, etcetera. It’s a page I’ve been wanting to do though because it’s been a whole lot about Hani lately – how she’s changing, where she’s going, all that. This page, on the other hand, is about Te’len.
