#159 – “An Unfriendly Reception”

Well he certainly looks healthy, doesn’t he? Wonder if it’s something he ate..

As a heads up, sunday may be without an update; it largely depends on how quickly I manage to complete something that needs to be done this weekend. We’ll see what happens.

Trust the instincts of a warrior, counts double if her name is Hani. Poor or should I say luck dwarf, he will be out of his misery soon.

I’m just wondering in what kind of trouble that dwarf was in. I’m sure it’s nothing Hani can’t handle. But let’s not forget the rest… ;)

TY nhani for true zombie dwarves…it is a bit far fetched that everything turns into the same kind of undead.

Oh there’ll be a swarm of more ‘regular’ undead to go along; I needed the first one to be something that could be mistaken for a dwarf at a glance, however. I experimented with putting a ghoul head on a dwarf body but.. quite frankly.. it didn’t look hideous, it looked ridiculous.

So we got a sickly looking dwarf for our first show.

Hey Nhani I was wondering, because you make all these comics and you seem to get right into the whole “character” thing, I was wondering whether you play WoW on an RP server? It’d be a shame if you didn’t.

I do, though I’m nowhere near as active as I once was. The way old Earthen Ring EU community has swung over time, it mainly caters to people either wanting Grand Plots or Events, or Stormwind Madness. Not really belonging to either category, I’m more of a forgotten relic of a bygone age who mumbles about long-lost glory days and speaks of this non-existent time when people were consistent and everything was better.

I do ponder how our game-world would be if Blizzard didn’t change the tough world where only the most hard-working and dedicated players would achieve greatness to a world where you must be the best to get the least and all the awesome, shiney stuff is more or less thrown in the face of players who aren’t even worthy of getting it. It just ruins the concept of challenge and leaves us ancient souls with nothing but rubble, from which Blizzard think we can build castles, but which they just go ruining over and over again (from a role-playing perspective).

Although, I do stay true to the cause that hard work still pay off, thus me along with a guild of long-dedicated players aim to reach further in all PvE-contest than ever before. A good way to do so is merging with guilds that’s either on the same level as your own or even higher, but consist of as dedicated and friendly players as your own.

Do the same thing, Nhani, and you might achieve great things too.

very good work on the Dwarf undead.
To my knowledge they don’t exist in wow atm so a great recolouring!

  7. November 27, 2009 at 13:20

dwarf dk’s have undead skins so they actualy exist

Ironically, I ended up using a non-Death Knight texture as base; largely because I wanted the eyes hollow rather than glowing. The first iteration wasn’t “dead enough” however, so I ended up splicing in some yellows and greens in there, plus some bits of the ghoul texture, though you can barely see that.

    Well to be honoust Nhani…

ER is actually becoming better with the whole RP thing.
Besides that lord knows I hate SW as much as any normal NightElf should but meh :P

In any case. Theres more and more RP’ers growing up and finding opther places then just SW to RP in, even Darnassus more and more.

But as always great page :)

I never thought it made sense that they were turned into ghouls, especially since ghouls are taller than actual dwarves. <.< Great page, anyhow!

  10. November 27, 2009 at 16:46

Then I’m a lucky roleplayer. On Argent Dawn EU – also an RP server – there’s plenty of Kalimdor RP, there’s a whole Kaldorei community, and I’m glad there is! There’s plenty, it’s quality, and it’s not all about big plots and such.

The Scourge finally pops up in this WoW comic aswell.
Let’s see how Hani deals with the Lich King’s minions….

      Right, let’s see…

Excluding the programs I use to export models/textures from World of Warcraft (something like two versions of modelviewer, plus some other converter programs, plus Milkshape to convert models to a format I can use) I mainly use 3ds for rendering and modelwork, and Paint Shop Pro for working with textures.

and Nhani this is what i meant whit an FAQ.

As I recall, you never actually specified what should be in it, nor supplied a context for it.

So far I’ve been content with using the “full 3D rendering environment” catch-all because as far as I see it, people will either know what the term means and have a good idea of what I’m doing, or they won’t and would most likely need a crash course in 3d graphics before having an idea of which environment to choose. Additionally, I think most of the time, knowing which program I use actually isn’t half as interesting/useful as knowing how I use them – I think most the features I use exist in some form or another no matter which environment you’re on.

I actually do mention which programs I use in passing on Thoughts for Food every so often – usually when writing more technical posts about how a certain biped was aligned, how many triangles a model is comprised of or any such.

I don’t mind the idea as such, but it seems like a slight lack of content to build an entire FAQ for. I’d want a few more things than that to mention, preferably. If people come up with enough ideas though, why not.

But 3D-max cost an enormys amount of money so if your not ready to spend it there is an free version thats closing in on 3D-max name is Blender goggle it if you like to Avalin.
although you need to install Python to get it to work but that’s an free codex Program to so its safe.

Make a movie of this comic and the scene that follows this page would surely scare the crap outta any unsuspecting person – really, who would expect a lone dwarf miner in a empty mine to be zombified if they didn’t know the game world well? ^^

  18. November 29, 2009 at 10:46

urm nhani can’t realy animate that much(atleast the walk animations) and that’s 1 of the reasons there isn’t a movie/video. here’s one attempt i found on youtube it dosn’t look bad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl-dtL2w9G8&fmt=18

      November 29, 2009 at 13:31

The funny thing is that the way the posing is pretty much exactly the same way you would when doing animations – the only difference is inserting appropriate spacing between the keyframes and doing some manual interpolation along the way.

Those are really the hard part since it’s essentially the “acting”; in a way it’s like learning to ride a bicycle – no matter how much you know how it works intellectually, you still have to find your own sense of timing and balance before you can do it. I just haven’t really had the time nor a compelling enough reason to practice enough at it.

..and that old animation.. erk.. it definitely shows what I mean since the timing is all off: there’s no pause between the facial expressions for one, and some parts of it should really be played slower, while others should’ve been much faster. It’s still very mechanical, and predates the walk by quite some time. Also, that rig is ancient – you can really tell with how the nose has essentially been smoothed into oblivion.

On a plus note, it actually shows what things looked like back when I was experimenting with using cloth simulation and external armor models rather than doing things “the Blizzard Way”.

Just saw a few of the clips from that poster, and I think the one you linked was extremely dark, except the face that was literally lit up. The other one with Hani’s face expressions were much better, although I agree with Nhani: the timing on the face expressions were awful, but would otherwise make good in a Behind the Tree movie.

Nhani, have you considered borrowing the models you use to someone who’s good with movie animations? That would make this whole comic complete ;)

Of course, same as Japanese animes, the mangas should always be several steps ahead in the story, so you can read up on the story before each new episode of the movies are released. Then again, Japanese manga is just fuzzy and hard to read, unlike a normal webcomic.

        December 2, 2009 at 01:54

It was meant to be dark, but yes – I think video compression made it worse. The test one with Hani was even worse for timing (though was more meant as a function test than anything, so timing wasn’t as important as showing what expressions were available)

As for lending the models out.. I think there are a few too many issues ascribed to it for it to be likely – if I’d support an adaptation to that degree, then creative differences becomes a potential issue, not to mention that I think most people who can work really well with 3d model animation tend to start as 3d modelers first and wouldn’t really have much need for my amateurish work ;)

Plus, if it’s a direct adaptation of a narrative, then there’s a risk that it’d call for voice work and suddenly it’d turn into this huge vehicle on its own and I’m not sure that’d go well.

I think it’s more likely that I end up finally having enough time and a good enough idea that I make some sort of animated short of my own and actually spend enough time with it for it to look good enough. I’m not promising that either though since quite frankly.. animation is a lot of work.
