#146 – “Sentinel of the Hill”

Right, here we are. This page took awhile longer than anticipated since it’s pretty much an adlib – I knew what I wanted for today, but in spite of my best efforts to cut down on dead time spent, I felt that I really needed something in between #145 and then meeting Gryan Stoutmantle. I wasn’t sure what, just that I needed a beat between the two for it to feel right. I was actually off on a completely different idea at first, but it never solified enough – there was just too many gaps. Then along came this idea and I ultimately decided it was better, or in the least more interesting.

I found one of the greatest issues with this page was finding good shot angles – unfortunately, any pickups I did for backdrops naturally ended up shockfull with Brewfest adornment, and avoiding actually showing that took some trying.

poor Protector Leick, he needs a vacation, a quick trip up to goldshire should cure that reaction, lol.

and sigh….Te….Tiny is going to have a blast making fun of her for this one.

I’m amazed someone recognized him! I actually spent a decent amount of time prowling through the People’s Militia roster to find which Protector that seemed most appropriate to run into, seeing locations, ages and genders. Leick ‘won’ the roll as such – whether that makes him lucky or the opposite I’ll leave for people to decide on their own!

    Te’len can’t be THAT clueless… can she?

I imagine it wouldn’t occour to most night elves: either due to a relaxed cultural attitude to showing bare skin or because they like men (those that don’t like women as well) ^.^

…plus, there’s Nelf and human eyelevels to consider.

This reminds me of a conversation between a night elven family, think sisters or mother and daughter, and a human and his sister in Ashenvale forest, how the human William reacts to the night elf Becanna and then her view over what happens, which is totally diffrent.

Here, I found a link to one of the npc’s, the conversation is there too, if not just go to south-western Ashanvale near the dryad shrine there’s a little house.

        Anyway:

I generally don’t think of Te’len as clueless, really – culturally ignorant yes, though no more than Hani is. They just have different ways of interacting with people. To me, Te’len’s way of leaning down towards humans is her way to try to be nice – something like what she might do when speaking to children shorter than her.

The reaction is simply not one she’s used to expecting.

Well… ill be the first to say ELFboobies! O.o.. and yes, i do really think she can be that innocent :P.. Then again think about it a second… 1: she was kidnapped. 2: a sailor tried his luck with her. 3: The episode at the inn. 4: this.. In a way i think she knows, and then again denies it, i mean, we know how she feels about her appearance as displayed at the pages at the inn. And when takeing the 4 ladies of our group, she is the one who displays herself the most… prehaps she will in time realise how she makes males look at her, but thill then we can be amused about her cluelessness ^^

      October 3, 2009 at 11:16

I tend to think of it that Te’len is the only one who really cares about being pretty – Hani is definitely more about comfort, utility and.. well.. support, Tiny doesn’t really have extensive options for that size (and I doubt she’d willingly be caught dead wearing dresses for dolls) and Areen is all knightly garb. I don’t think Te’len intends to look sexy as such, but I very much think she wants to look pretty simply because she likes to.

this is definetly another one of those cases where Nhani is showing us the difference in height between humans and night elves and how leaning forward to make eye contact while wearing a dress like that will give off quite a view ;)

    October 1, 2009 at 22:09

hehe, i think Te’lens little shoulder satyr is finally getting a hold on her! about time!
and indeed, thats what i call quite a view! its a miracle she does’t have male gnomes crawling under her dress!

I love the way Te’len’s clothes always bring out the culture clash, both between her and the duo and between the night elves and humans. I had assumed that, in a society where a brief bikini is considered acceptable (warcraft III archers) that her clothes are probably intended to be quite modest? She’s wearing something that covers her shoulders, and for all that skirt is split, she has got it on, and it is long and does sort of imply covering even if it doesn’t actually cover much from the front. Given the way she tends to stand and move, and her reaction to the “figure” question in the inn, I would have expected her not to intend anything “suggestive” by that dress. She feels that innocent… and people never want the responsiblity of enlightening those who are.

Someone really should tell her that in the Eastern Kingdoms, it is customary to wear a little more, though! The character portrayal is excellent, and its potential for humour continuously realised. I’m really enjoying reading it. Thank you very much for writing it!

    :)

This, very much. I think too that Night elves draw a very distinct line between Love and Lust, and while they’re definitely not strangers to (nor above indulging) either, I do think they would consider it not only impolite but downright shameful to do overt displays of lust without explicit permission by the recipient.

In other words, oogling someone for their figure is something reserved for children and adults are expected to appreciate and compliment rather than stare; going for both sexes, seeing the amount of night elven men that seem to have an allergy towards anything even remotely resembling a shirt.

Te’len definitely cares more about her appearance than the rest of the group – there’s no doubt in my mind that she likes being ‘pretty’ (though she generally doesn’t carry herself as if she tries to be sexy) and her choice of dress reflects that. Prior to the trip to Stormwind too, her experience with human men is pretty much just Delgren, and Delgren doesn’t really strike me as the sort to stare.

i think must guess would get a time lag if someon pooked them on the shoulder and a set of unaware boobies was dead ahead. that poor humans bloodpressure rose with 100% ;P

and nightelfs apparently dont wear as much clothes as humans clearly seen in WC3.

hmmm starting to wonder what sexy clothes is amongst nelfs. 2 stamps and a cork? o.O

    • 20 Ilyara
      October 2, 2009 at 12:54

Perhaps covering yourself is more sexy? A long flowing dress that suggests, conceals and whispers, is far more alluring than a thong and tape.

        October 2, 2009 at 22:10

Maybe it’s not the clothing, but the body language and the way they act, maybe what they say, you never know…

      • 22 Nhani
        October 3, 2009 at 11:03

This, I think. I’d say very flowing fabrics, dresses that catch the wind, hints of shapes and very specific mannerisms are all attached. I think relatively speaking, they’d actually be less fazed by someone jumping around in the nude.

    October 1, 2009 at 23:37

Te’len is the classic case of the “hot foreign girl” scenario. Back home, Te probably rated as above-average pretty, and made even less attractive by her rather reserved nature (something that seems to be fairly rare in the Night Elves’ amazonian society). The fact that she shows some skin is a moot point: Night Elven society is known for showing lots of skin for both males and females (on that note, I always felt Blizzard should have renamed Ashenvale Forest as Ashenvale Jungle, since it would have better justified the lack of clothing as well as the panther-like Nightsaber).

Here, in the Eastern Kingdoms, however, she’s tall, shapely and exotic. That fact has obviously occurred to Tiny, and probably to Hani too. However, Te’len herself won’t likely catch onto this fact until someone blatantly brings it up to her (which I hope never happens, since she’d probably cover up with an extra-thick sweater and never take it off). She probably wrote off the guard’s reaction as shock from seeing an elf, and dismissed the man at the docks as being too drunk or especially rude.

So I don’t think Te’s aware of her new-found attractiveness, even on a subconscious level, simply due to the fact that her “cluelessness” is simply a result of culture clash.

Anyways, fantastic update, as always, Nhani! Keep up the great work.

I actually hope someone pops Te’lens innocence bubble, couse it might get her more trouble then she wants(and te’len NEVER EVER wants trouble…) besides, i like to pop ppl’s bubbles, gives me a warm bubbly feeling inside when they discover that they have been as blind as a bat to things about themselves, or have simply pushed them away for one reason or the other…

  16. October 2, 2009 at 18:19

I saw where you had written that you were having problems with the backgrounds and getting things that weren’t filled with Brewfest decorations. With the exception that it doesn’t provide any weather details (such as clouds, for one), have you tried using Map Viewer? Of course, that would mean that you would have to have a separate installation of WoW as it doesn’t work ever since version 3.0.2 and no one has created an updated version, AND you would have to do your own clouds and weather (fortunately, you can turn off the sky box for that and have a chroma background), AND the sky is totally screwed up in Tanaris (most of it is the sky scene from Caverns of Time), AND it doesn’t seem to work with the BC expansion (and obviously WotLK), but it is a good tool for getting old-world content shots with a lot better precision.

Anyway, just thinking aloud, I guess.

Great job as always! I’m just starting out in the webcomic field for WoW using the models and yours has been a big inspiration!

Hot nelf, human male standard eye level…heh…

    • 30 Nhani
      October 3, 2009 at 11:07

I’ve actually only ever used the map viewer once.. it was ages ago, back when I first heard of Modelviewer – before they added the dressing room feature to WoW itself (which is what I used modelviewer for back then); it was an unstable crashy mess at the time and I never quite got around using it since. I have a copy of the old pre-Wrath data files for the old Modelviewer though because it tends to be easier (and more consistent!) to use than the newer ones, so I might try the mapviewer if I can find it and see if it still works on those.

Oh and good luck with your own work!

I just remembered: Rei *has* been here before. She would be more familiar with the way human men fixate on breasts. Speaking of which, in panel 3, they look a bit too shiny. It probably has more to do with lighting than anything else, and I know how tricky lighting is for this.

    • 34 Timber Wolf
      October 3, 2009 at 01:19

And whats wrong with shiny Nelf breasts? HUH? HUH??? NOTHING!! THATS WHAT!!

      • 35 Pinka
        October 3, 2009 at 01:36

Agree. And as far that goes. Night elven skin is very shiny. As also seen in the intro of the classic wow. So theres nothing bad about that. Next to that they don`t wear very much since clothing would restrict their movement. They wear it mostly for show and status.
It is funny when cultures meet each other and don`t get a clue about what`s going on.

      • 36 Ragefury
        October 3, 2009 at 02:59

True that – as nelfs lives in more damp, dark landscapes (just look at Ashenvale – every single treetop forms a sort of “roof”) their skin pigment are alot brighter than that of the humans, whose landscapes are more “open”.

To say it simple, I personally don’t find anything wrong with how Nhani has set up the lighting – in fact, it’s much better know than it was before.

Other than that, I don’t have much to say about this page … wait, CLEAVAGE!? Christ, you should’a stopped by the Stormwind library so Te’len could’a bough some human culture book – next she’ll probably fright that Stoutmantle guy to death :O

    • 37 Nhani
      October 3, 2009 at 11:08

I think it’s less that Te’len is shiny and more that poor Protector Leick is comparably dark for some reason. Not sure why he kept ending up like that.

      • October 3, 2009 at 14:49

What struck me as “off” was how much MORE shiny the breasts were than the skin between them and her chin, especially the right one.

      • 39 Nhani
        October 3, 2009 at 14:57

Oh that’s just due to a shadow – you can see pretty clearly the edges of the shadow ends right above her right breast and at the right side of her neck – I’m guessing it’s the shadow of her head actually, with the light casting shadow coming from above and slightly to her right.

If you compare it to the seventh pane where she stands up straight rather than leaning forward, the same shadow ends around the base of her neck instead because her head is further back, relatively.

      • 40 Germ
        October 3, 2009 at 16:54

I thought all elves were supposed to be shiny. Their racial is to repel dirt.

      • October 4, 2009 at 02:58

Germ, you’re thinking of Tales From the Floating Vagabond, where Elves are given a free rank in “Look Good At All Times.”

Not likely, unfortunately – I have the base script in place, but there’s still a line or two missing, and even if I manage to sort that on time, it won’t be enough time left to do all the renders in what time I have free this evening.

        Still, it’s underway.

    I’ve made a breakthrough!

Ahem, not exactly a “breakthrough”, but I have noticed something regarding Te’len’s outfit. Her top is exactly the same as that of Isla Starmane, an escort quest npc in Firewing Point, Terokkar Forest. The skirt, however, are not the same, and thus its source will remain a mystery unless Nhani choose to reveal the secret for us ;P

    • 49 Synchronizor
      October 4, 2009 at 15:55

Te’len’s outfit is based off of some pieces the Feralheart Raiment.

This was the level 60 druid Dungeon Set 2, a half-epic, half-rare 8-piece set that was obtainable via a LONG questchain that gradually replaced the Dungeon Set 1, the Wildheart Raiment, piece by piece.

In my opinion, this set is the best looking druid set in the game, and seeing it in this comic promped me to track it down, and eventually get it for my druid character. Now, whenever she’s not out fighting something, she’s wearing this set, along with the druid T8.5 headpiece. I havne’t found any better-looking armor for a Night Elf druid.

The last piece of the vanity set is the Draenic Wildstaff from heroic Auchenai Crypts, but the droprate gods are frowning on me for the time being…

      • 50 Ragefury
        October 6, 2009 at 00:05

At least we have something in common: we love to gather old end-game stuffs – I have a lvl 68 blood elf palading with the full Warlord’s Aegis (lvl 60 epic pvp set), and if you ask me it’s the best looking paladin pvp set in the whole game obtainable from honor points only – not some shining, but half-ugly Outland pvp set or dull and gray Northrend set.

      • 51 Nhani
        October 6, 2009 at 16:51

Te’len is a rare case in that her outfit is based on “actual class gear” – as in, she looks like a druid in the game might. This isn’t really the case for the rest, who all have styles based around a theme and not really on game elements as such.

It looked good on her though and felt like people would quickly make the association that she was, in fact, a druid, so I made an exception in her case.

      Working on it..

I thought it’d be fairly quick to finish, but then I ended up spending over an hour(!) trying to find a texture set for Gryan Stoutmantle, and two more hours having to fix the local network at the apartment building I live in.

It’ll be done when it’s done; have like six panes to finish still, and I would wish some food inbetween.

I this page is about a year old, but it reminded me explicitly of an old character of mine.
As you are of course aware, night elf eyes glow. When male night elves take a bow, their eyes close, but the glow doesn’t vanish. At least it didn’t last I played him. However, the glow remains horizontal in every angle, making it look like he’s looking forwards, nomatter what I did. The funny thing is that everytime I did a /bow before Tyrande Whisperwind, the glow in his eyes made it look like he was trying to get a closer look at her cleavage.
