#266 – “Dusky Directions”

Right, so I’d initially planned to have this page up by thursday, but then I hit a slight snag in that the harddrive I use for bulk storage started suffering a slight drive failure. It isn’t catastrophic – I can still access parts of it, and I really don’t have all that much important project data on it as such, so in theory Beyond the Tree shouldn’t have suffered at all from it.

In practice, it did contain all my old World of Warcraft datafiles that I use for outdated versions of Modelviewer and such, plus apparently about half the textures I use to make up the actual inn. So when I was going to start working on the actual 3D parts, I had all the characters there.. but half the inn was a stylishly flat and textureless gray. So I ended up spending my thursday instead trying to rescue the missing textures.

Also, this page is making me hungry…

Nice spot. So it is, third panel, standing next to our accented bartendress.

Also, in retort on the remarks about “growing”, what growing? Rei hasn’t grown since the comic’s beginning.

Also, why has Hani’s meat seemed to have fallen off the bone?

The simplest answer is probably that she devoured it in four panes flat! Beware Hani Foonmall, bane of turkey legs.

Heh, and there was me thinking it was something to do with some well-cooked turkey just happening to fall completely off the bone.

Should not that read, “and *if* you are interested…”?

Has anyone one else noticed that Rei’s cheese wedges appears to have… grown, since last we saw it?

Argh, don’t you just hate that one person at the table who is done eat when everyone else is barely started, because they don’t talk?

    Nuke-cle-are vovles?

To be completely correct written language it probably should have a second if there, yes; as spoken language however, it felt to me that the second if was already implied by the first (being part of the same question and all) that I didn’t need it.

Also, all this talk about growing is a joke that should stop running start and taking it like a man! Cheese wedge right between the eyes, BAM!

Hey, your call if you wanna make a thousand English teachers shed a single tear as they watch you drive down the highway. I’m easy.

Given the natural visual focal point of the last three panels, I just wanted to get that in before -someone else- did.
        Also awesome? Foucault pendulums.

        Fun Fact of the Week:
watch?v=MdSJFrhb-HM the lady at the end? Not scripted. Walter and Michelle were just asking random passers by, and she was the only one who responded.
Technically, this qualifies her for membership in the Screen Actors Guild.
        Neat, EH?!

The actual question is how will Tiny actually eat that huge piece of cheese?

Sorry to hear about your hard-drive, hope it gets fixed Nhani.

Well you don’t really “fix” harddrives; either you’re lucky and it’s only temporary and they recover with a scan, or you replace it. Optionally there are companies that can recover data from such drives (at significant price) if it’s that important.

My data isn’t, so I’ve gotten a replacement; still looking to see how much I can recover and how much I’ll have to recreate or reobtain. Once that’s done, I’ll just toss the old broken one in a bin.

You all know that our Jedi will just keep making Cameos thill she ends up doing the dubble-bladed entrance at some point… ahh, still the best scene in all the movies in my book.

I wonder how much Rei eats… i mean… imagine being small (and cared for) in a world with SO MUCH YUMMY FOOD!… and relative to your size, you’d NEVER be hungry :P
    Anywho, good page! ^^

OK, I’ve counted a thousand times, and maybe I’m a bit late but does Areen have only 4 fingers (on each hand)? Is this the same for all gnomes? I never noticed before! Gonna go check out some gnome photos…

She only has four per hand, yes; both the in-game models and most of the official art show them with just four. There are examples of artists that draw them with five out of what I’d assume is sheer habit, but as far as I’m aware they only have four fingers per hand since World of Warcraft.

Yes, I realised this after looking at some pictures. I’m amazed I didn’t notice before! Huh. I learn something new every day. :P

Can I ask what you are using to export the models of the world? The cathedral, the city and inns? I’ve been trying and failing badly at finding any way that does such and not just grab the dodads hanging around or just saying screw it and try and model it myself.

Nowadays, I actually use the newest versions of ModelViewer. It’s a little.. temperamental, though – half the time it’ll crash or fail to behave properly and half the time when it actually does work it’ll still do things like get a third of the materials wrong so you still have to go around finding which textures are incorrect and then try to locate the actually correct ones. Also, it doesn’t actually export all the dodads with the main model, so you still have to furnish the thing manually. And finally, in the case of very large exports, the nature of the OBJ importer results in the importer gobbling up absurd amounts of memory, choking on itself and dying.

I used to have some other exporter that generated MaxScripts, but it didn’t even include material assignments, so it was a ton of work just to manually locate and place all the appropriate materials in the scene.

Really? I was looking at model viewer and it seems only the dodads can be exported. I don’t even see any buildings or even maps. How do you get the world and the buildings? Or am I using the wrong version? 0701 r582?

….any hope you may offer your max versions of the buildings for dl? :P

Any cataclysm-compatible one is capable of doing it as far as I know (though again, they can be a bit temperamental) – the first thing you have to do is look in the bottom left corner (that’s where it is by default, anyway) and locate a drop-down box that by default should start as “Models (*.m2)”. What you want is to change that choice over to “WMOs (*.wmo)” and you’ll find larger buildings. The OBJ exporter is the one I find has the greatest chance to work, and tend to get at least half the textures right. The rest you’ll possibly have to dig out of the mpq files manually, though.

As an aside, the “ADTs (*.adt)” choice is supposed to be the raw terrain, but I’ve never seen those properly display, and they always seem to export as nullsize files. There’s supposedly a tool that could export them, but I’ve never found a copy of it to actually try with.

In older, pre-Cataclysm versions you don’t have that drop-down and instead have to navigate the tree down World->Wmo->* to find the buildings (it doesn’t even know terrains exist to my knowledge), but ones that old tend to export nullsize models or just plain crash when you try.
